Fish Doctor King Samon Alert - June 11, 2001
Spring fishing for king salmon in the Mexico Bay/Oswego area has never been
better, and the kings are still hitting. If you're interested in catching some kings or
big browns, now is the time.
Yesterday, June 10, we located an area in 100 - 150 feet of water where
prespawning alewives were staged, and fished it hard. We ended up 4 four 5 on
kings from 12-22 lbs., along with four browns up to 12 1/2 lbs. All but one 4 lb.
brown came on dodgers and Howie Flies.
We¹ve been fishing Howie Flies behind dodgers for almost a year now, and they
are impressive to say the least. We¹ve taken every species of trout and salmon in
Lake Ontario on them, and we¹ve caught a lot of kings on them in May and June this
year. In 2000, after about August 1st, my two 28¹ charter boats, the ³Fish Doctor²
and the ³Alaskan² fished them almost exclusively for kings and cohos in
combinations with spoons and plugs. Our best trip with them this spring was on
May 18 when we went 10 for 13 on kings up to 21 lbs. in 5 hours of fishing.
We¹re using a hot new dodger developed in Lake Michigan called ³Silver Glo². It¹s
silver plated, but has a brushed finish rather than the old ³mirror² finish, and reflects
a soft glow of light rather than a bright flash, perfect for crystal clear water. The other
two hot dodgers are the old chrome/silver prism and a white dodger with pearl scale
tape.
Howie Flies have been used by the pros on Lake Michigan for years, but last year
was our first year using them on Lake Ontario, and also the first year we heard of
them being used on the lake. They are definitely hot for trout and salmon. Our top
producing colors are Glitter Green, Aqua, Glitter black/silver/green, Powder Blue,
and White Pearl.
