As has been reported recently, the salmon fishing for the past three weeks has been VERY slow. It's not that there are not salmon in Mexico Bay, but rather, their reluctance to become attached to the hot items which we have been towing beneath the surface of the water. Charter boats operating out of Lighthouse Marina at Salmon River's mouth hav been doing as well as anywhere with catches of between 2 to five Mudmarlin per boat with the average being three. About 50% have been coho salmon. Hotspot flashers with long 60 to 70 inch leaders stretched 15 to 20 feet behind the weight have worked best. Sex toys (J-plugs) with long leads behind the weight are starting to work well as the fish start to become more agressive with nastier attitudes. The switch in salmon preference towards Magnum sized spoons is also occurring. As of today, the hot depth zone overr which most in the know boats were fishing was 80 to 100 feet with the thermocline rising. It may be in the 60 foot range by tommorrow morning. I ran 13 miles out to the northwest to 350feet and trolled west to 410 feet between 10am and 2pm looking for larger variety mudsharks and took four over the slot forkies averaging 31 1/4" and weighing around 12 lbs. Also captured two teenagers (salmon) weighing 11 to 12 pounds. All taken on either silver glow dodger with powder blue howie flies on 22" leader or dolphin michigan stinger 12 to 15 feet behind the weight. Depths down were 102' and 84' over 350' Feet. 350' to 360' seemed to be the range. good fishing. walleyed out
