Still Warm, Rains Forecast, Snowpack letting her hair down, ETC, ETC, You get the Idea, right? BUT, BUT, BUT,....Do not despair Steelhead Rangers and Mouseketeers. All is not lost as believe it or not, the driftboats are still catching some fish. Mostly Fresh Bullet chrome in the lower river and Estuary,.....OR way up high in the river above the confluence of the river with ORWELL Brook. Below the Tribs the Salmon River's water is stained and trash filled. Stay at least above the BULLVINES, (NOT BOVINES) and concentrate on the gravel. Work the fine gravel areas like Fraziers, Ellis Cove, Muskrat hole, lower Bullvines, Brown's Diversions, Lower Orwell Diversions, ETC. anywhere where there is high quality nesting gravel or redd digging areas. Believe it, those in the know are taking reasonable numbers of trout off of the Salmon River with EGG SACKS!!. Or you can do what the spawning Trout do when water levels surge out of their banks. Go east young head-hunters. Way, way, up in the upper reaches of the tributaries of tributaries and you will find the Trout. BIG TROUT. Dress drably, no flashy colors, wade stealthfully, and throw egg bags with no weight. All you have to do is start the egg sack drifting smartly three feet above the trout and let it bounce down to them at the speed of the current and they mostly just snap it right up, almost instantly, almost guaranteed......IF, IF, IF, you don't spook them first. If they see you first, the Jigs up, and they go lockjawed. Don't start whipping five #2 packmen on Twenty #LB test down like a cinder block into the water with a hunk of sponge and expect them to nibble. Fish quietly, unobtrusively, and be unseen and they will gobble your HOT PINK SPECIAL RECIPE TONY'S SALMON COUNTRY SPORTS EGG SACK without hesitation. Remember, Egg Sack, no weight, and at the speed of the current and you'll bang em' WE were one for four today with dozens of others that we saw but spooked in smaller, clear water tributaries of Tributaries. Road Atlas time. Wear some rubber off the underside of your waders soles and you'll find chrome units. Good fishing. Walleyed Out!
