I finally saw that turkey today. A waste of my three *Canadian* dollars. The story was dumb and uninvolving and the acting was generally wooden. Humans and simians alike were all cardboard characters. The only character I actually enjoyed watching was Glenn Shadix's senator. And yes, Chuck Heston was fine (it pains me to admit that, I despise him so much both as an actor and as the NRA chairman). I found Tim Roth's performance especially disappointing. And the very bland Mark Walhberg acurally made me long for the hammy, but colorful, Kirk Douglas in Spartacus. This is my least-favorite Tim Burton movie.

DW was okay. He had a few good lines. Even though it wasn't particularly distinguished, his performance was one of the few lively ones in the film. He made you feel that there was a soul breathing in his ape outfit, which is quite an achievement, I'm sure.

I really missed Kim Hunter, Roddy McDowall and Maurice Evans. Sure, they made less convincing chimps, but their roles were so well written! Even Linda Harrison was a better actress than her counterpart in the sequel, Estella Warren!

BTW, the chase scene in the rain forest and the big battle in the desert were very spectacular. If only Burton had been working with a better script and better "human" actors, what a movie he could have made.

He's a wonderful raconteur, so don't miss it! His other biographical stories are wonderful too. Especially the one about how being a fan of the Mamas and the Papas saved his life -and his sanity- during his horrible adolescence. www.glennshadix.com

I almost saw it in Chicago at something called a Brew & View (or something like it) at a bar: Fifty cent beers to go with it. But the showing I could make was too late to be able to make it back to the hotel on the CTA. I can only imagine it wouldn't be much fun if you're not drunk. I would probably have all the same opinions of everything, especially Estella Warren. What do people see in this broad? I thought this was her first and only film, but apparently the mistake's been made a few times already. Nova was eloquent without having any dialogue, but this new blonde character is like a Playboy version of Xena. It makes little sense that the humans are on the same evolutionary plane, all it does is allow for more bad dialogue all around. Feh...

Sorry to hear you found POTA so tedious! I didn't hate it as much as you did, but, I agree, except for the vastly improved make-up, the original was much better. It seemed like a lot of the actors were spending way too much time worrying about their ape walks and trying to enunciate around their teeth to give believable performances ... not that *all* of the actors had that excuse!

Am I the only one who found Paul Giamatti kind of entertaining as Limbo? And I thought Tim Roth was a pretty good bad guy--at least he played it with gusto ... although he didn't give as much dimension to the character as DW would have. I think he was enjoying himself too much!

I checked out Glenn Shadix's site--and filmography. Like DW, he's got a few other apes in his past--he was in Dunston Checks In!

I too was disappointed not to see one single character carried over from the original film. I also missed Cornelius and Zira and Dr. Zaius. (I was a huge Roddy McDowall fan back in those days!)

I'm really sick of seeing all the old classic movies remade, to tell you the truth. Ninety percent of them are inferior to the originals. I think POTA is one of those that, because everyone already knows the ending, you really *can't* remake it the without changing it ... and when you tamper with perfection, you can only make it worse. It's obvious all these remakes are just trying to make a buck--because they can't think of any new ideas. (Bedazzled is another classic that *really* didn't need to be remade.)

Personally, I never cared for Tim Burton's films until I saw Ed Wood. And I loved Sleepy Hollow! But I hated Beetlejuice, and Batman holds the distinction of being the only film ever literally to put me to sleep in a movie theatre.
