Cinephilia decided to dismantle her beautiful tribute site to DW today. It no longer exists. It is very devastating for me because the site was the vehicle where I rediscovered DW, but more importantly, I met my best friends, Payne's Girl, HRB and Cinephilia and it is because of them that I am here to post this message today. I've been going through some very hard times and without all of them I would have given up, you see.

I support her decision, but I am sorry to see her lovely work vanish like this, but she wants to move on.

Thank you Louise for all your hard work and for all the years of info, pictures and stories. I'll miss them but I'll look forward to whatever you have planned next! ;-)

I'm not up on Shaw so I can't say for sure if there is A Shavian Way of staging things, but some aspects did irk me. The structure of the play leaves the title character as an animated rhetorical device. Barbara literally announces her changes of heart after she pops on again after a scene change, or after someone stops "making speeches" (to coin a phrase), leaving me to think, "Huh? How did that happen when I wasn't looking?" That's nothing you can blame the director or actors for, but there are some things missing that maybe they can work on - it is, after all, a 3-HOUR-long comedy. The pacing per se is quick enough that you can still make out what people say, so where's the fat to cut? Well, as I say I don't know Shaw but I know funny. (Think of Joe Bologna as the fake Sid Caesar in My Favorite Year, telling the mob boss, "In *my* business, you don't cut funny.") David Warner knows funny. I wish I weren't who I am and in the forum I'm in because it can be blown off as gushing. Really, this is my considered professional opinion that this man knows comic timing is more than pausing after a line as if to wait for a rim shot. You're up there doing things like traveling from one end of the stage to another, or entrancing or exiting, or sitting in a chair, or working with a prop. You can either do all that as if waiting for the next opportunity to say something funny or you can *be* funny doing all that. This man knows how to be funny (and true to his characterization at the same time) by merely adjusting himself in a chair while someone else is talking, without upstaging the other actor. That can only be done by someone who knows what he's doing and understands the difference between declamation and engagement (and is aided and abetted by a costumer who makes him look less like a Victorian relic and more 20th Century relic as the play progresses).
I'm not going to say only Warner does that, since the man who plays Cholly is (as a Betty-White-in-Golden-Girls type overaged ingenue) quite adept at milking his props, clothes and stage business with energy and economy - watch him hold a newspaper like a kid who can't yet read!
Where's the fat? Well, Barbara's boyfriend is showcased far more than is justified by his character, I think. He gets lots of sequences where he's isolated on one side of the stage addressing the audience while supposedly conversing with someone else, which I find unconvincing on principle. There are half a dozen instances of him doing what I can only call a melting candle wax pose, when he is yet again unabashedly overwhelmed by his infatuation. Now it does get laughs each time, but as someone who knows funny I can tell you that there's a difference between riffing and building a bit. Serious comedy repeats only to improvise or amplify. If you can't think of a way to build a bit out of the sequence you can cut most of it, leaving about five minutes you can allocate to other people (the Steven character for instance, who seems unsympathetic from the opening and stays that way). Believe me, five minutes in stage time is an eternity.
Why do a good number of the performers not really take full advantage of their stage time? Perhaps it's still early in the run? Are they that uncomfortable in period dress? Hmmm...

This was a happy day for me, not just because I had the pleasure of meeting Jen, but also that we would be presenting birthday gifts and salutations to DW on behalf of everyone here.

Jen saw 'Major Barbara', so I met her near the stage door. I came with a bouquet of white roses and she with her beautiful scroll of birthday greetings. It didn't take long for DW to emerge from the theatre. He signed a woman's program in the vestibule of the stage door and remained there for a minute or two lighting his cigar. We saw he about to re-enter the theatre when we approached him. I presented him with the roses and wished him Happy Birthday, and Louise, you were right, he *did* recognize me from our meeting in June! Then Jen explained the contents of the scroll and gave it to him. He smiled, thanked us and said 'it was very sweet of you to do this for me', or words to that effect; I was so dazzled by his gorgeous blue eyes that the exact words went through one ear and out the other! Maybe Jen can help me here. Then I asked him if Jen could take a photo of the two of us. He said yes and, as Jen was aiming the camera, David put his arm around my shoulder and gave me a lovely squeeze and I, being all of 5'3", nestled my head against his broad shoulder
:-)!!. He was wearing a nice cologne which was the icing on the cake for me. Then, after Jen snapped the picture, we wished him Happy Birthday and he went back into the theatre. Jen and I wondered if the cast was throwing him a birthday bash.

I'm so glad Jen and I did this. He seemed truly touched that we -- meaning *all* of us -- had remembered his birthday and he genuinely appreciated the gifts. I promise to post the photo that Jen took as soon as possible.

The website says the play's extended to Sept. 9th "only" for some reason. I had hoped it would go on long enough for Rosie (or at least Carolyn Rhea's neo-Rosie show) to start up again, so they could have him and/or Cherry Jones on, but oh well.

I was rifling through the Hamlet book for Melissa last night and was reminded that 35 sigs may sound like a big deal to us, but for someone who had hundreds at a time camping out for him when he was hardly more than a teenager it's really workaday.

However I've finally had to admit to myself that I was disappointed, because I had harbored this half-baked, irrational expectation that he would pat me on the head and say, "OK, I understand that Web people aren't all dangerous nutballs." I don't want anyone to read my messages and be discouraged or crestfallen in any way. This was really all in my head. Hey, maybe I am a dangerous nutball after all! ;)

I saw today's matinee of 'Major Barbara'. It's a very good production and I enjoyed all of it, but my eyes and ears were glued on DW from start to finish. He was truly magnificent. His performance was so seamless and graceful and he has great comic timing and that beautiful voice ringing out through the theatre were just glorious. It's just blows me away that this man hasn't done a play in 30 years. He looked so at ease on stage and I have to say he's very brave to do this having been away from the theatre so long.

After the play ended, I went to the stage door where 3 other DW fans were waiting for him. After a short wait DW emerged from the theatre smoking a cigar and dressed in a striped button down shirt and jeans. I was surpised to see that he wasn't as tall as I'd expected. He was a little stooped over, but he didn't look 6'2 to me. He has very lovely blue-green eyes, and his voice up close is a thing of beauty.

He seemed genuinely surprised that people were there to greet him. One teenager had him sign a Star Trek book and DW asked him what he thought of the play. The guy said that he hadn't seen the play, and DW playfully scolded him for it. That was a funny moment. I stayed in the background while he signed more Star Trek book and an 8x10 glossy from Masada. Then I approached him and as he singed my program ('To Melissa - David Warner'), I told him how great he was in the play and how wonderful it was to have him on Broadway. Then I told him how superb he was in 'Horatio Hornblower' and that I hope he gets an Emmy nomination for his performance. DW smiled and thanked me, but said with a little sadness in his voice that he didn't think enough people saw it so it would probably be overlooked. But he told me that he loved the role, the script and the cast of 'HH'.

Then DW asked me what I thought of the play. I told him I enjoyed it a lot. Then he asked me if I thought it was funny and if I 'got it', and I told him absolutely. Then he thanked me once again for my compliments, touched my arm, smiled and said goodbye. The touching of my arm was an unexpected thrill :-)!

It was a great experience all around and I urge everyone who is able to see 'Major Barbara' to definitely go. I'm planning a repeat viewing of the play and will hopefully be able to get better seats so I can watch DW up close.

I've seen many of DW films/tv work, but hardly any roles where he gets to do love scenes because he's so often cast as a villian. In 'Morgan!' DW was plenty convincing in his love scenes with the luminous Vanessa Redgrave. But in his less distinguished films (e.g. 'SOS Titanic' and 'Necromonicon') the love scenes fall flat. So, what are your favorite DW love scenes and why?

P.S. He doesn't get any love scenes in 'Major Barbara' :-(.

Hi Louise!
Have you ever seen a (made for tv I believe) movie called "Marco Polo" from the early 80's? I remember it was shown in maybe 3 or 4 parts and DW was in the very beginning and the very last episode. It was a Chinese/Italian production and starred American Ken Marshall in the title role. Even though David didn't have a huge part in it, I remember being totally mesmerized by his performance. The opening scene showed Polo imprisoned (no one believed his fantastic tales of his travels) and DW who played The Scribe, and fellow cell-mate, recounted the wonderous stories of Marco Polo's travels serving as the narrator.

There was this one scene in particular where David was truly magnificent. The camera was soley on him, while he was recalling in detail one of Polo's many adventures. It seemed to go on forever, (I relished every minute of it!), and he did it all in one take! I was astounded at the length of his soliluquy, his capacity for memorizing all those lines totally blew me away! I was already a big DW fan before I saw him in MP, but this performance, cemented for me his incredible acting ability and stage presence. I can still remember being so disappointed after being "glued" to the tv to catch a glimpse of him again, and being dismayed that he didn't appear until the very end of the last episode!

I'm always on the lookout to see if it is ever shown again on tv, and actually once it was shown on the French station, you would have benefited from that Louise! Unfortunately, I'm not bilingual but I did watch a bit of it anyway, and managed to catch some of David's performance, but with a dubbed voice, well, it just wasn't the same. I have also checked (without luck) to see if it ever made it to video.

Has anyone else out there ever seen this????

Well, a reporter and a photographer spent a day on the Hollywood set. DW wasn't around at the time, but the article mentions him in passing anyway.

Each ape mask was custom made for the actor who was going to wear it. I can't wait to see Shankar (DW).

On the magazine's cover, there was a pic of an ape with blue eyes. It did look a little like Mr. Warner (no offense intended), but with its orange beard it must have been an orang-outang (or whatever you spell it in English).

Terrible! The Flash animations are all boring AND annoying. And *sob* the "skip intro* button doesn't work! As for the trailer... *shaking head*

Cheez Whiz, Netscape had a link to Entertainment Weekly, which makes you hit a new page per photo (and then forces you to keep closing a Space Cowboys ad that takes forever) and for what? A whole lotta nothin'. Same for their on-set thingie. I swear Helena's chimp looks more like a Disney cartoon character than a mutant humanoid. The official site is a bust too. First there's the Flash gauntlet, then there's a movie. Try finding the "skip" buttons and then try pushing them and getting a response without crashing your browser. Eeeeeeeeeeek!!!!!! What's the emoticon for tearing one's hair out???

The site's map was seen over 600 times since Mutiny first aired on A&E.

Here is the review of Hornblower I mentioned a couple of weeks ago. DW was absolutely phenomenal and should receive an Emmy.

You can find a scan of the whole article at:

There are also three screen captures featuring Cpt. Sawyer in the Mutiny gallery.

Finally, there are several press articles that praise DW's performance.

Man it seems like forever. I've just been watching the stock market go down and getting ready to refinance our mortgage (long story).
Meanwhile I've stumbled across a fanfic site (http://www.fanfiction.net/) that has a subsection for, of all things, Horatio Hornblower in its tv section. Any connection? I don't think I missed that on A&E yet, but as I said, I've been distracted...
Hope this board works out better than the others!
