Subject: Meeting DW

This was a happy day for me, not just because I had the pleasure of meeting Jen, but also that we would be presenting birthday gifts and salutations to DW on behalf of everyone here.

Jen saw 'Major Barbara', so I met her near the stage door. I came with a bouquet of white roses and she with her beautiful scroll of birthday greetings. It didn't take long for DW to emerge from the theatre. He signed a woman's program in the vestibule of the stage door and remained there for a minute or two lighting his cigar. We saw he about to re-enter the theatre when we approached him. I presented him with the roses and wished him Happy Birthday, and Louise, you were right, he *did* recognize me from our meeting in June! Then Jen explained the contents of the scroll and gave it to him. He smiled, thanked us and said 'it was very sweet of you to do this for me', or words to that effect; I was so dazzled by his gorgeous blue eyes that the exact words went through one ear and out the other! Maybe Jen can help me here. Then I asked him if Jen could take a photo of the two of us. He said yes and, as Jen was aiming the camera, David put his arm around my shoulder and gave me a lovely squeeze and I, being all of 5'3", nestled my head against his broad shoulder
:-)!!. He was wearing a nice cologne which was the icing on the cake for me. Then, after Jen snapped the picture, we wished him Happy Birthday and he went back into the theatre. Jen and I wondered if the cast was throwing him a birthday bash.

I'm so glad Jen and I did this. He seemed truly touched that we -- meaning *all* of us -- had remembered his birthday and he genuinely appreciated the gifts. I promise to post the photo that Jen took as soon as possible.

You really make us feel as if we were there with you, meeting Mr. Warner!

DW was wearing a light blue button down shirt which showed off his eyes to perfection. But I can't for the life of me recall what kind of pants he wore; they might have been khakis. He definitely wasn't wearing the jeans from our last meeting.

You think so? I thought I saw all blue, but I wasn't checking. We hardly had time to shake hands and exchange pleasantries. It is great that he looks exactly the same onstage and off, and onscreen and off. He's not one of those people who looks deflated and ordinary in real life, or overly well-groomed or pampered. I thought that was just grand.

As for his reaction to us, I still think the roses were the better idea (future visitors take notes!). They were dignified and immediately understandable. Once it came to me, when I asked him to verify it was his birthday [my hidden fear was, we had gotten it wrong (from Web sources, doncha know), since I hadn't read the Times article at that point] he said "aye" guardedly, as if dreading we were some kind of embarrassing Singing Telegram or who knows what. As soon as I asked him "You're not on the Web, are you?" he answered flatly and quickly, "No" and that was that. I'm now pegged as one of Those Web People, who hang out in That Nutty Place People Go To Make Stuff Up. By the time I finally blurted out I'd seen the play I had already overstayed my welcome, but I really wanted to make sure he didn't think I was one of those people who hang around stage doors. God only knows how many of those he gets.

Speaking of the Times, I've already emailed them to correct the impression he's only presented on the Web in a negative light.

And you rascals, Melissa told me the "duelling thumbs" joke! Thankfully she didn't say anything until after we were done or I would have cracked up in front of him without being able to explain why.

I had actually been tempted to buy some Godiva "cigars" in the Port Authority Hallmark but stopped myself. We can't possibly be on "gag gift" terms.

Because we can't be on terms at all of course. I do understand this, I'm just worn out enough I'm not being very articulate.

Thanks, Jen, for sharing your side of the story too. It sure is nerve-wracking when you only get 60 seconds to make an impression on someone ... I'm sure he wouldn't have come out at all if "stage-door people" bothered him so much. Although with all this publicity all of a sudden, I'm sure he's going to have throngs of people crowding him after every performance. The show I was planning to go to is already sold out! :-(

Also, a HUGE thank you for organizing and creating the birthday scroll!

Actually, maybe we're lucky he needs a nicotine fix now and then! ;)
Are you really serious about the sold out part? I can't believe it (well, maybe all the Times coverage kicked it, huh)... Will you have time to come in to go to the TKTS booth for last minute tix? Should I try for you? I'd hate for you to come all the way here and not see it, he really is a laugh, though I know you have something else to go to. Let me know...

>Are you really serious about the sold out part?

When I called the theatre, the woman said that there were "no" tickets left for August 16 ... After a pause, she added that there were box seats if I wanted them. From the way she made it sound, box seats are about one step up from sitting in the broom closet. (Box seats give you a partially obstructed view--25% of the stage is blocked.) You can't even buy box seats through their website. Faced with the possibility of not getting into that performance at all, I broke down and went for the box seats. (At least I saved $25.)

Not knowing I'd already bought the tix, Melissa found a few choice single seats left for that performance (thanks again for going to the trouble of checking, Melissa!)--which they never even offered me, apparently because I'd asked for two seats. (Sitting separately would be preferable to sitting in the "broom closet," but it's too late now; the tickets are non-exchangeable. It'd be nice if they'd at least mentioned the option!)

Thanks for offering, Jen! That's very generous of you. Are last-minute tix different from "cancellation" tix? Because waiting till the day of the show and buying cancellation tickets (if there are any) was the other possibility they offered me. I was afraid to go for that option because, as you say, I didn't want to take a chance of getting all the way there and not getting in; I do have something else to go to that weekend, but DW is the primary reason I'm going! The rest is just filler.

But if I could get last-minute discount tickets for $30, it might be worth it to buy a second set (combined with the box-seat price, that'd only be $5 more per ticket than the cost of an orchestra seat), but "cancellation" tickets don't fall into that category, do they?

Yes, I believe the cancellations are available only at the box office a few hours prior and they are not discounted. Who would the second set be for? If you buy from the theater I think they are non-refundable. You'd have to scalp those! ;)

So it's safe to say that there won't be any of those last-minute $30 tix left for this performance!

Moi? *Scalp* tickets? What kind of person do you think I am?! ;-) But seriously, for the extra $5 I really would just waste the first set and replace 'em with the second--who'd buy 'em from me anyway if there were last-minute orchestra seats available for $10 less?

Oops, sorry, I mean "same-day" for the discounted tix. Sloppy terminology. However the box office may let you trade up from a full price box seat; you may have to ask what their policy and schedule for that is. The unused comps are generally released at the theaters a few hours before the show and you have to wait in line at the box office. Here's the thing, would you be free to do that or should I wait in line to sub for you (if they'd even let me)? Should I call?

Wow, Melissa, that's so awesome! It's so great when your hero lives up to and even exceeds your expectations. Interesting how he came out of the theatre, even though he had to go back inside afterward ... You don't suppose, do you, that he got wind of the plan (we sure didn't keep it a secret!) and came outside just to meet you? Even if he didn't, what a *supremely* nice person he is!

Thanks for sharing your story with us. I can't wait to see the picture! (Hope I'm as lucky as you when I see the play next month!)

Thank you, Jen, for writing the birthday scroll. It was great that you really had the chance to meet David Warner and see him on stage. As I am living in Germany there is no possibility for me to see him on stage - so you are lucky! When I read Melissas report I felt if I was there with you, too.
