I thought I saw all blue, but I wasn't checking. We hardly had time to shake hands and exchange pleasantries. It is great that he looks exactly the same onstage and off, and onscreen and off. He's not one of those people who looks deflated and ordinary in real life, or overly well-groomed or pampered. I thought that was just grand. As for his reaction to us, I still think the roses were the better idea (future visitors take notes!). They were dignified and immediately understandable. Once it came to me, when I asked him to verify it was his birthday [my hidden fear was, we had gotten it wrong (from Web sources, doncha know), since I hadn't read the Times article at that point] he said "aye" guardedly, as if dreading we were some kind of embarrassing Singing Telegram or who knows what. As soon as I asked him "You're not on the Web, are you?" he answered flatly and quickly, "No" and that was that. I'm now pegged as one of Those Web People, who hang out in That Nutty Place People Go To Make Stuff Up. By the time I finally blurted out I'd seen the play I had already overstayed my welcome, but I really wanted to make sure he didn't think I was one of those people who hang around stage doors. God only knows how many of those he gets. Speaking of the Times, I've already emailed them to correct the impression he's only presented on the Web in a negative light. And you rascals, Melissa told me the "duelling thumbs" joke! Thankfully she didn't say anything until after we were done or I would have cracked up in front of him without being able to explain why. I had actually been tempted to buy some Godiva "cigars" in the Port Authority Hallmark but stopped myself. We can't possibly be on "gag gift" terms.

Are last-minute tix different from "cancellation" tix? Because waiting till the day of the show and buying cancellation tickets (if there are any) was the other possibility they offered me. I was afraid to go for that option because, as you say, I didn't want to take a chance of getting all the way there and not getting in; I do have something else to go to that weekend, but DW is the primary reason I'm going! The rest is just filler. But if I could get last-minute discount tickets for $30, it might be worth it to buy a second set (combined with the box-seat price, that'd only be $5 more per ticket than the cost of an orchestra seat), but "cancellation" tickets don't fall into that category, do they?

Oops, sorry, I mean "same-day" for the discounted tix. Sloppy terminology. However the box office may let you trade up from a full price box seat; you may have to ask what their policy and schedule for that is. The unused comps are generally released at the theaters a few hours before the show and you have to wait in line at the box office. Here's the thing, would you be free to do that or should I wait in line to sub for you (if they'd even let me)? Should I call?
