Hi Louise!
Have you ever seen a (made for tv I believe) movie called "Marco Polo" from the early 80's? I remember it was shown in maybe 3 or 4 parts and DW was in the very beginning and the very last episode. It was a Chinese/Italian production and starred American Ken Marshall in the title role. Even though David didn't have a huge part in it, I remember being totally mesmerized by his performance. The opening scene showed Polo imprisoned (no one believed his fantastic tales of his travels) and DW who played The Scribe, and fellow cell-mate, recounted the wonderous stories of Marco Polo's travels serving as the narrator.

There was this one scene in particular where David was truly magnificent. The camera was soley on him, while he was recalling in detail one of Polo's many adventures. It seemed to go on forever, (I relished every minute of it!), and he did it all in one take! I was astounded at the length of his soliluquy, his capacity for memorizing all those lines totally blew me away! I was already a big DW fan before I saw him in MP, but this performance, cemented for me his incredible acting ability and stage presence. I can still remember being so disappointed after being "glued" to the tv to catch a glimpse of him again, and being dismayed that he didn't appear until the very end of the last episode!

I'm always on the lookout to see if it is ever shown again on tv, and actually once it was shown on the French station, you would have benefited from that Louise! Unfortunately, I'm not bilingual but I did watch a bit of it anyway, and managed to catch some of David's performance, but with a dubbed voice, well, it just wasn't the same. I have also checked (without luck) to see if it ever made it to video.

Has anyone else out there ever seen this????

I came across some more info. David's Italian character's name in the film was Rusticello. I came across a newspaper clipping that I had stuck in a book I bought in China about Marco Polo. The clipping (from 1995) talked about a theory that Polo never went to China himself and that..."his "Description of the World" published in 1298 was ghost-written by Rusticello, a popular romantic writer (yes, that's our David!) who shared a prison cell with Polo after the Genoese invaded Venice."

Hi, Wini! Great to see you here! :-)

I've never seen Marco Polo ... In fact, I don't think I'd ever heard of it till the IMDb. Sounds great though (the beginning and end, that is). Soliloquy? Wish I could hear it! Thanks for telling us about it.

I've never seen Marco Polo either. Maybe it will air on Canada's History Television eventually, or on the Historia channel in Quebec... Historia shows a lot of old minis dubbed into French.

When I hear DW's "speaking" French, I almost always nearly die laughing. Or I get so angry at the betrayal of his performance, I throw a magazine at the TV set (like I did for TAT).

It's the seven hour long television series with Ken Marshall, and Leonard Nemoy, and David Warner etc...
It was my Dad's favorite when I was little, he taped it off the TV onto Bata and we would watch it all the time... I had scenes memorized at the age of seven!!
I think I found a place to order it (yay)at http://us.imdb.com/Title?0083446 (imbd.com)
I agree though... one of the best movies ever.

It eventually gives you a DVD result, but it's for a Jack Palance action flick.
