Subject: And now for something completely escapist ...

Speaking of needing a little escapism (I've had that Monty Python song running through my head for the past two days now!) ...

Anybody here watch Freakazoid? It's currently airing every morning at 5:30 EST on the Cartoon Network; I've started taping them. (Only saving the DW ones though.) The show is starting to grow on me, and DW is hilarious as the Lobe. He gets all kinds of silly lines you'd never get to hear him say anywhere else! In the one I saw last week, he's downright diabolical one minute (villainy incarnate!) ... and the next he's falling from a great distance, going "Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!" (The IMDb has a page of great quotes from the show with a couple of choice lines from the Lobe: http://us.imdb.com/Quotes?0111970). I found an episode guide (http://members.attcanada.ca/~jacjud/freakepisode.html), and it seems that, out of a total of 24 episodes, he's in at least 7. (I found one on the list that doesn't mention the Lobe, even though he's definitely in it. It's the "Orangu-men" episode! So it *could* be more than 7.)

It seems that they're running them in order ... which means tomorrow is #14, featuring the Lobe's "fiendish musical number"!

... which should air tomorrow morning. (I think Sunday is the only day it's not on.) The Lobe appears in #2, 9, 14, 15, 18, 21, and 24 ... and compilation episode #8A.

It's riotously funny, DW sings a parody of "Hello Dolly"....

Not Fan Girl, really!

The same episode where his latest scheme to get Freakazoid to chase him around is taking over the airwaves in order to collect every TV show ever made ... so he won't have to program his VCR anymore. His proudest accomplishment: finally collecting the Candy episodes from last season of Ponderosa! (Remember those?)

I love that show--it's too bad it only lasted 24 episodes. It's loaded with great cultural references (although not *quite* on a par with the Simpsons) and absurd humor. The Lobe is the funniest villain (naturally), although lots of other "groovy character actors" provide voices as well. (The Lobe count is now up to *eight* episodes, BTW.)

There have been several Tron references on the show. In one episode, Fan Boy spouts off a bunch of Tron trivia; in another, the Lobe causes Freakazoid and his buddy Cosgrove to be sucked into the virtual reality game they're playing (also shades of DW's The Outer Limits first episode!). And, of course, there's the whole concept of how Dexter Douglas *became* Freakazoid. (No wonder DW is computer-phobic.)

Oh, gawd, I don't sound like Fan Boy, do I? The character is hilarious ... but makes me feel a bit paranoid too! Ack, I *knew* I shouldn't have written that fan letter; I'm sure I sounded like a pathetic sycophant. Really, Mr. Warner, we have lives, honest! But your work--and the nice group of people who meet here to talk about it--just make them a lot more enjoyable. (Oops, that sounds like something Fan Boy would say too, doesn't it?)
