Yeah, he does, doesn't he? It's probably the height thing, he's several inches shorter than DW. Anyway, I THINK he was referring to either Eugene in Hostile Takeover or perhaps Lawrence Beesley in S.O.S. Titanic. Eugene really is a loser, but Lawrence is kinda cute, I thought. My favorite scene in SOS Titanic is when he and Susan St.James are standing at the rail talking about the unused stateroom. Hostile Takeover really isn't that good a film, but for sheer DW time it's hard to beat (and he gets lucky before he dies, which is sort of nice). Although, having said that, DW is the star of Quest of the Delta Knights, and that film is terrible -- watch the MST3K version, instead.

All interesting characters are losers in some way, aren't they? "Leading men" and action heroes always seem a little dull and predictable to me. Give me a flawed antihero any day! Eugene is one of my favorite characters, and I even liked the movie, although the cop interaction was pretty lame and clichéd. But I thought the basic story was intriguing and tragic.

I watched SOS Titanic in the middle of the night during a severe bout of insomnia, so I don't remember much about it, but I agree that he wasn't really a loser in it. Didn't he even end up getting the girl in the end? Funny, that scene you mentioned, where they're talking at the railing, is the one scene that comes to mind when I think about the movie!

DW is the best thing about Quest of the Delta Knights. He looked great as the good guy, and he was hilarious as the bad guy (although I didn't care for the black wig!). The MST3K version was great, but did you notice that they edited out most of DW's bad-guy scenes (sorry, the character's name escapes me at the moment!)? I consider that a compliment to DW's comedic skills since apparently those scenes weren't bad enough for them to spoof--and would probably have given the jokesters too much competition! What do you think?

EUGENE WASN'T A LOSER!!!! he was misunderstood!!!!

And Jack the Ripper Wasn't bad...He was just drawn that way!!!

And Lovejoy wasn't an asshole.....he was badly constipated.

Okay, Henry Buchannan might be a loser...but he got some.....

Eugene got some, too, as I recall. OK, so maybe he held up his office with an M-16 and was really fond of T.S. Eliot, but if I worked there with those people I'd go a little nuts, too.

I think Lovejoy was the best thing about Titanic. Rose should have gotten back at her fiancee by sleeping with his butler instead of Jack.

Hey, maybe we should start a new thread listing movies where DW's character gets lucky, that would be a lot more fun than his bad guy roles.

Unfortunately, that would be a very short list. I can only think of three off hand....Eugene, Henry Buchanan, and Morgan. Any one else think of any others?

Has anyone seen The Little Unicorn? It's airing on Encore this month. DW is definitely *not* a loser in this movie. He plays the heroine's granddad, and he's in it quite a bit. He's one of the few sympathetic characters. (And he looks rather nice with a beard in it too. :-)) I still haven't gotten around to watching it yet, but from what I've seen, he has a similar role in Shergar, doesn't he?

It also depends what you mean by "lucky" ... Some of his bad guys got lucky too (Jack the Ripper got lotsa girls), and Morgan didn't exactly live "happily ever after," at least not in conventional terms!

Sounds like a fun topic, but could you clarify the "rules"? Thanks!
