Nice to hear from you again, HRB! Thanks for the heads-up about Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde too, Jen. I probably would have overlooked it if you hadn't mentioned it. Did anybody else catch it? It's not one of my favorite "horror" stories (a little too realistic--a respectable gentleman experiments with drugs and turns into a murderer/rapist, battling his inner demons and bringing himself and those around him to ruin), so I was wondering why (1) it's considered such a Halloween classic and (2) why it's been remade yet *again*. However, John Hannah does a great job with the title roles, convincingly mild-mannered, altruistic, guilt-ridden, and tortured, alternating with hedonistic, menacing, and downright evil ... and, unlike previous versions of Mr. Hyde, with very minimal makeup. The moviemakers make great use of the latest FX technology, which I suppose makes it worth a remake. (I've never seen it, but my friend tells me John Hannah stars as a Scottish detective in the BBC series "Rebus." And I'm sure I'm not the only one who'll recognize him from "The Mummy," where he played the heroine's brother.)
Come to think of it, Jekyll/Hyde would've been a great role for David Warner, don't you think? Here, however, he plays yet another purely villainous role--an unscrupulous politician. (Hmm, maybe election season is the real occasion for this airing!) Fortunately, after Hannah, he gets probably the most screen time in the movie, and he gets to show another side of his personality in his memorable last scene.
Overall, I thought it was a well-made production. If you missed it, it's on again (in the U.S. at least) on Thursday, October 30, at 9:00 p.m. and 12:00 midnight and Friday the 31st at 4:00 on Bravo.
