Another book I read for book chat is Millicent Min, Girl Genius, by Lisa Yee. Millicent is an 11 year old girl in 11th grade. So, she really is a genius. At school, she has trouble fitting in. She¡¯s a little young for the high scholars to hang out with her, and her 11 year old friends are mad at her for abandoning them, so Millicent hates going to high school. She has a very¡ unusual childhood, but summer vacations here, and she¡¯s going to use this time to try and live a normal life. Millicent very much loves her grandmother, Maddie, and spends much time with her. However, Maddie is moving away. To make things worse, her mother is having her take volley ball as a sport and tutor Stanford Wong, whom she despises. One lucky thing is that at volley ball, Millicent found a friend. Her name¡¯s Emily. There¡¯s one problem though. Emily thinks Millicent is a regular average girl, and Millicent things that she¡¯s only being her friend because she¡¯s normal. Hiding her awards might not be so easy¡ One day at the library where Millicent is tutoring Stanford, Emily shows up, and wonders what they¡¯re doing. Millicent couldn¡¯t let Emily know she¡¯s a genius, and Stanford doesn¡¯t want to say he¡¯s being tutored because he begins to like Emily. So, they had to lie and say Stanford is tutoring Millicent. So, because of Emily, Stanford starts to work harder. And everything Emily knows is a lie. How much longer can Millicent keep her secrets?
