When Michael returned to the bathroom, he was pleased to see that Adam was still quietly playing with his bath toys.

“Okay Adam.” Michael said quietly. “It’s time to get out of the tub and put your pyjamas on. You can stay up for a while after our company comes, but then you’ll have to go to bed.”

“Okay Daddy.” The green-eyed imp in front of him said greeting him with a smile. “Where’s Mommy?”

“She’s getting ready for our company.” Michael said; smiling back. He loved hearing his son refer to his angel that way.

Quickly Michael supervised the toys positioning on the back of the tub, dried his son off and dressed him in his flannel pyjamas.

The sight of the fading bruises on his little one still made his jaw clench in anger, but he knew that Adam wasn’t going to ever be hurt like that again under Nikita’s care. That thought soon helped him to calm down once more.

Both father and son headed for the salon when they were done and Michael put Adam’s colouring book and crayons on the coffee table and then crouched down to his son’s eye level as he’d seen Nikita do.

“Adam would you like to colour for a while?” Michael asked quietly.

“Okay Daddy. Can I use any colours I want to, like Mommy said?” Adam asked.

Michael smiled slightly. “Of course. Thank you for being such a good boy Adam.”

“I’m always a good boy, Daddy.” Adam said quietly.

“Yes, you are.” Michael replied seriously. “Daddy’s expecting room service to come by soon, and then our company should be here after that. It would really help Daddy if you played quietly until then, okay?”

Adam nodded his assent, and Michael smiled at him once more; lovingly ruffling his dark, wavy hair. Just then there was a discreet knock at the penthouse door and Michael stood up to go answer it.

“I’ll be right back Adam, it’s probably room service,” he said.

It was indeed room service and Michael directed the waiter who brought the tray to put it on the coffee table in the salon. Michael tipped the man generously and then saw him to the door.

He was just letting the waiter out when Madeleine and Leon put in an appearance at the door.

“Bonsoir.” Madeleine said in greeting. “I trust we’re not too early Michel?”

“No, not at all Madeleine.” Michael replied. “In fact, you’re both right on time. Leon, it’s good to see you too. I’m sorry, but Nikita isn’t quite ready yet, but that’s all right. Come in and sit down and have some coffee.”

“Good evening, Michel.” Leon said in greeting. “I want to thank you for allowing me to come here tonight. I knew you’d understand.”

“I do Leon.” Michael said warmly, shaking the other man’s hand. “And thank you for not fighting us on the custody issue. Adam’s in the salon right now, and once you see him and meet my Nikita, I know you’ll realize that you’ve made the best decision for him.”

“Have you told Adam that he will be able to stay with the two of you from now on?” Leon inquired curiously.

“Yes. Nikita and I also told him that he can call her ‘Mommy’ from now on.” Michael said quietly.

“You didn’t waste any time on that, did you Michel?” Madeleine inquired in an amused voice.

“No, I didn’t Madeleine.” Michael replied seriously. “You can’t imagine how thrilled he was when we told him he could do that. He’s been begging us to let him call her that for days now.”

“He likes your new wife that much already?” Leon interjected in surprise.

“He adores Nikita, Leon.” Michael replied, turning to the other man as he addressed him seriously. “You’ll understand when you meet her.”

“I see.” Leon murmured.

“I assure you, you will Leon.” Michael replied.

“And what did you tell him about tonight, Michel?” Madeleine inquired.

“I told him that the ‘nice lady’ who brought him to me was coming over tonight with a ‘friend’.” Her client returned simply.

“I’ve been called a lot of things over the years Michel,” Madeleine said with an amused smirk, “but ‘nice lady’ isn’t one of them.”

Both men smiled slightly.

“However,” she continued, “that was a good way to explain Leon. Adam doesn’t need to know anything else about you, wouldn’t you agree Leon?”

“Yes,” Leon said nodding his head in the affirmative. “A five years old wouldn’t be able to grasp what I do. I also don’t want him associating me with Elena. It would only upset him.”

“I totally agree.” Michael said. “Come now… Adam’s waiting and Nikita will be with us shortly.”

As it turned out, Nikita had managed to get dressed and ready far faster than she’d imagined, and so it was that she was sitting on the divan when the two lawyers entered the room with her husband. She stood then and prepared to greet their guests.

Even with her quickened preparations she’d managed to pull together a very casual, but polished look. She heard Michael suck in his breath and she could tell by his smile that he approved.

“Hello Madeleine.” Nikita said quietly as she extended her hand to each of her guests in greeting. “It’s nice to see you again. And you must be Leon. Hello… I’m Nikita. It’s so nice to meet you. Please, won’t you come in and sit down?”

Leon felt like a bolt of lightening had struck him when Nikita’s flashing blue eyes targeted him. His first thoughts were, ‘Wow! What a gorgeous lady! This is the person Elena called a ‘bimbo’ and a ‘tramp’? Yeah, right!’

The lovely young woman in front of him was dressed like a college student in well-worn, but respectable looking blue jeans that fit her trim form well without being overly snug. She had paired those with a simple, but attractive powder blue, short sleeved cotton eyelet blouse. There were small white flowers embroidered on the points of the collar and on the cuffs that bordered the sleeves. The blouse buttoned modestly up the front, fitting her perfectly; showcasing her trim figure without being daring. To finish the effect, she’d chosen to wear her tan loafers. She’d brushed and plaited her long blonde hair into a neat braid that cascaded down her back and had tied a powder blue scrunchie around it. Then she’d curled and fluffed her bangs. To complete the polished look, she’d put on a minimal amount of makeup; mascara and a little lip gloss. Her jewellery consisted of her rings, her watch and the necklace and earrings that Michael had given her as a wedding present.

‘I have to admit, she’s not what I expected.’ Leon thought as he admired the lovely lady in front of him. ‘Then again, Elena always was a liar. This is the woman she called “a tacky bleached blonde?” Elena needs to get glasses along with an attitude adjustment!’

Aside from her pleasant physical appearance, what really struck Leon was the sweetness and love that radiated like sunshine from the beautiful blonde’s face.

‘No wonder Adam adores this lady!’ he thought as he took in the beauty before him. ‘Any child would! Her beautiful eyes just glow with kindness and you can feel that there’s nothing phoney about her.’

Madeleine watched with a smirk of amusement as Leon stared in awe at the poised and polished young lady in front of him. She had to give Nikita credit. Her casual ensemble was a subtle mixture of innocence and simplicity. Unlike her predecessor, there was nothing about Nikita’s ensemble that screamed wealth and influence.

Michael was delighted by the charming look his wife had affected and as he stepped forward to possessively wrap one arm around her shoulder and kiss her porcelain cheek, he briefly closed his eyes, and appreciatively inhaled.

‘What is that delicate scent? It smells like the floral perfume my grandmother wore when I was a child. Merci Bon Dieu it’s not an overpowering stench like the scent Veronique doused herself in!’

“You look incredible chérie!” he whispered in her ear. “You smell wonderful too… what’s that scent?”

“It’s lily of the valley. I borrowed it from Lakeisha. Do you like it?” Nikita whispered back.

“Very much.” He replied with a quiet growl that only she could hear. Then he chuckled and kissed her softly on the cheek once more. “I think Leon is speechless, ma chérie. I’ve never seen him look so stunned before.”

That earned Michael a demure smile and he noted with pleasure that her eyes lowered shyly and a delicate pink flushed her pale cheeks.

‘Where did Michel find her?’ Leon wondered in amazement as he stared at the gorgeous blushing blonde Michel was embracing. ‘It’s obvious that he adores her and I can’t blame him. She’s certainly a refreshing change from my client. And she’s blushing! I haven’t see a woman blush since well before university. Stephanie isn’t going to believe that what I’m seeing here is real. I can hardly credit it myself!’

“Please,” Michael said, taking up his duties as host as he looked at Madeleine and Leon; finally remembering that they were not alone, “won’t you both sit down?”

The four sat then, and after a moment, Nikita seemed to overcome her embarrassment and turned to Madeleine; politely inquiring, “Madeleine, would you like a coffee?”

“Yes I would, thank you Nikita. Milk, no sugar.” Madeleine replied with a smile as the blonde poured her a cup of the hot liquid and handed it to her carefully.

“Of course Madeleine. I remember that’s how you like it. And you Leon?” Nikita asked softly as she turned her attention to the grey haired attorney seated next to her husband’s barrister. “Would you care for a coffee too?”

“Yes, thank you Madame Samuelle.” Leon replied politely. “Black please, no sugar either.”

“Certainly Leon, and please, call me Nikita.” The blonde said sweetly with a shy smile.

Michael smiled at this exchange and watched in amusement as Elena’s attorney flushed to the roots of his hair.

“And would you like some of these cakes?” Nikita said politely again as she lifted the plate that room service had brought, offering them first to Madeleine and then to Leon.

Both visitors declined, and then watched silently as their hostess poured another cup of coffee for her husband and carefully handed it to him.

Michael gently took the hot drink his love offered to him and then carefully leaned forward and kissed her.

“Thank you, my love.” He said softly, and Nikita smiled shyly in response knowing that he wasn’t just thanking her for the beverage.

During this agreeable interlude, Adam had been quietly colouring, ignoring the social pleasantries involving the adults around him.

“Adam, sweetie,” Nikita called in a soft voice as she looked towards where he was seated on the floor on the other side of the coffee table, “would you like some milk and some cakes?”

“Yes please Mommy.” Adam replied, earning an amused look from Madeleine and a raised eyebrow from Leon.

Come here then Adam, and sit by me.” Nikita said gently. Quickly the child complied.

“That’s a good boy.” Nikita said, as she set a glass of milk and a small plate with two cakes on it in front of the child while pouring another glass for herself. “Now be careful that you don’t spill anything, okay?”

Adam nodded seriously as his adoring eyes focused on Nikita, and then he looked up at the grownups who were watching him.

After taking a large gulp from his glass of milk, Adam’s green eyes zeroed in on Madeleine and his face lit up with a cherubic smile.

Madeleine couldn’t help but return his milk-mustached grin but she was not prepared for what the tyke said then.

“Thank you.” Adam said shyly.

“For what, Adam?” Madeleine replied curiously.

“For letting Nikita be my Mommy.” He said softly.

Leon choked on his coffee and set his cup and saucer down on the mahogany coffee table before him with a shaky hand.

“Adam!” Nikita quickly admonished, only to feel Michael’s hand grasp her arm gently. Startled, she looked up at her smirking spouse to see him shaking his head slightly.

‘Oh my! What is he up to?’ she wondered. ‘I didn’t really think he’d coach Adam to do this!’

With a slight frown, she looked at Madeleine, only to notice that her husband’s attorney was smiling slightly and had held up her hand, also admonishing her to let Adam speak.

“Does that make you happy Adam?” Madeleine gently inquired as she cast a sly glance in her client’s direction.

Madeleine was well aware of who had prompted Adam’s gratitude, but she felt that this innocent conversation would be highly instructive.

‘Leon’s going to realize who prompted Adam to speak, but I’m going to encourage it.’ She thought in amusement. ‘Talk about out of the mouths of babes!’

Michael shrugged and grinned unrepentantly in response to his attorney’s admonishing look. He was enjoying this immensely.

“Yes.” Adam said. “I like my new Mommy better than my real one. My real one was mean.”

“She was?” Madeleine inquired gently.

Adam nodded solemnly. “Yes, and she said she didn’t love me.”

‘That little bitch! How could anyone with a shred of decency say that to a child?’ Madeleine wondered in disgust. ‘I can’t even begin to imagine how Michel felt when Adam told him that!’

‘She what?’ Leon thought, thunderstruck. He had no problem believing what Adam had just said was true. He knew Michel was too much of an honourable man to stoop as low as coaching his son to say something this horrible. ‘Mon Dieu! Pauvre enfant! Talk about mental abuse!’

“And do you think Nikita loves you?” Madeleine continued seriously.

“Yes.” Adam said with an angelic smile; his shyness rapidly fading. “Daddy loves me too. My real Mommy told me he didn’t.”

‘Mon Dieu!’ Leon thought as he closed his eyes so they wouldn’t reflect the horror he felt to the young boy in front of him. ‘How could she? Has she no decency at all?’

‘What a horrible thing to say to a child! I’m going to nail that little witch’s butt to the wall!’ an outraged Madeleine fumed inwardly. ‘Whatever it takes!’

“Well, now you know that’s not true, right Adam? Your Daddy loves you a great deal.” Madeleine replied, trying to keep the shock and outrage out of her voice.

“Yes. He loves Nikita… I mean Mommy too.” Adam replied.

“I know.” Madeleine said quietly as she smiled at the tyke in front of her.

“And Mommy’s going to have a baby… so I’m going to be a big brother!” Adam gushed, thriving on all the adult attention he was receiving.

“Oh that’s nice.” Madeleine replied, smiling encouragingly. “Do you think you’ll like being a big brother?”

Adam nodded, suddenly serious. “Yes. And Daddy and I talked to the baby. It’s in Mommy’s tummy. Did you know that?”

“Is that right?” Madeleine replied with just the right mixture of curiousness and mock seriousness.

“Yes.” Adam nodded. “Daddy speaks to the baby in French and I speak to the baby in English. That way, the baby will know both, just like me.”

“That’s very nice, Adam.” Madeleine replied.

Nikita, in the meantime, had blushed a bright red, while Michael could hardly contain his mirth. He couldn’t have scripted this better if he’d tried.

Leon grinned at Adam’s antics as well while he watched Michel and his bride.

‘Now that I’ve met her, I’m not at all surprised to see Adam respond to Nikita this way…. any child would love this lovely lady. Michel adores her too… I never saw him respond to Elena the way he responded to Nikita earlier. They’re happy … and it means they’ll provide a good home for Adam. It’s also obvious by Michel’s delighted reaction to Adam’s little speech that he’s prompted this. There’s no getting around it… this is very charming, but it isn’t manipulation. No… I know Michel. He loves his son. As desperately as he wants custody, he’s an honourable man who’d never stoop that low.’

“My new Mommy’s very pretty, don’t you think so?” Adam asked as his innocent green eyes suddenly focused intently on Leon. “Daddy calls her an angel.”

‘An angel?’ Leon thought, his reverie broken. He focused on the embarrassed young blonde in front of him and tried not to grin. ‘I can certainly see why. Compared with Elena….’

Michael grinned even wider and before Leon could reply, an excited Adam stuffed an entire iced cake in his mouth.

“Yes Adam, she is.” Leon replied, with a glint of delight in his eyes. “Very pretty.”

‘And very shy too,’ he noted, as he watched the blonde’s face flush again. ‘Stephanie would like this girl. There doesn’t seem to be anything phoney about her.’

Leon was even more impressed when the blonde spoke again. Even though she was still clearly embarrassed, and it was evident she was a soft spoken person, her gentle authority came through clearly.

“Adam.” Nikita said quietly. “Please sit down and quit bouncing around. You’re supposed to bite the cake a little at a time sweetheart, not put all of it in your mouth at once. Please chew that up slowly and carefully before you speak again, okay?”

Adam nodded and Leon watched, impressed as the child sat obediently on the floor next to the blonde once again.

“Well,” Leon said, valiantly trying to sound serious as he finally found his voice, “this is all very amusing, but I’m sure this topic isn’t one Adam thought up on his own.”

“I’m so sorry.” Nikita began, but Michael put his hand up and seriously said, “No, I’m sorry.”

“Michel,” Madeleine said, breaking her silence, while her serious gaze narrowed in on her client, “please do us the courtesy of not lying. You’re not sorry, are you?”

“No, I’m not Madeleine.” Michael replied truthfully, as a delighted grin blossomed over his handsome face. “I’m only sorry that Nikita was embarrassed. I never meant for that to happen.”

“That’s okay, my love.” Nikita said shyly as she gazed at her husband adoringly. “I know you meant well, and if this hadn’t directed at me, I’d find this amusing too.”

“Thank you, chérie.” Michael said with a grin. “See Madeleine? What else could a man ask for… a beautiful wife who has a sense of humour and a forgiving heart too. Am I not a lucky man?”

“You are.” Madeleine said with a smile.

She had definitely enjoyed this. It was clear to her that Michel had orchestrated this little ‘chat’ in order to show Leon how attached Adam had become to Nikita. She could tell that Adam had been sincere in his childish way, and she could plainly see that Leon was impressed.

“Leon? Did you have any questions for Nikita?” Madeleine prompted.

“Well… all I knew about you when I came here tonight was your name and the fact that you’d married this crazy man.” Leon said as he glanced at Michel with a smile. “Tell me about yourself, Nikita. You know why I’m here. I’d like to be sure my decision was a good one.”

“Before you begin,” Michael interrupted in a serious voice as he stood up from the divan, “I’m going to put this young man to bed. Say goodnight Adam.”

‘A thoroughly wise move.’ Madeleine thought, nodding her head in approval. ‘What’s that saying Maman always used? Oh right…. “little pitchers have big ears.”’

‘Ooops!’ Leon thought, ducking his head slightly in embarrassment. ‘It’s a good thing Michel said that. I almost forgot Adam’s presence. It’s obvious that my client talked in front of him and said things she shouldn’t have. You’d think, having sons of my own that I’d know better.’

“Daddy!” Adam protested, now that his mouth was empty.

“Adam.” Michael said seriously, as he crouched down to his son’s level. “It’s time for bed and the grownups want to talk. Say goodnight.”

“Can I give Mommy a kiss good night first?” Adam implored with a winsome smile.

“Of course.” Michael replied with a slight smile of his own.

‘Adam’s stalling, but how can I refuse a request like that?’ he thought happily. ‘His reaction to Kita is so natural; they’re sure to see it.’

He waited patiently; crouched in the same position, while Adam gently kissed Nikita’s cheek and she kissed him back in the same way.

“Good night Adam.” Nikita said quietly. “I’ll see you in the morning, sweetie.”

“Good night Mommy.” Adam replied. “I love you.”

“I love you too Adam.” Nikita responded with a soft smile.

‘She loves him.’ Michael thought; pleased, as he watched the mutual affection between his wife and his child. ‘Mon Dieu I adore her!’

“Now say goodnight to our guests, Adam.” Michael said softly; focusing seriously on green eyes so much like his own.

“Goodnight.” Adam said obediently.

“Good night Adam.” Madeleine and Leon replied in unison, returning the child’s au revoir.

That accomplished, Michael stood again, lightly grasping the child’s shoulders and gently steering him towards the bathroom in preparation for bed.

Leon was impressed. His sons tended to argue when it was bedtime and yet Adam had responded immediately to a quiet, but stern voice and a gentle touch. He was also touched by the obvious affection between Adam and the young blonde. Michel had been correct earlier. Adam adored her.

Once Michael and Adam had left the room, Leon began again. “So, tell me about yourself Nikita.”

Leon and Madeleine both listened attentively while the lovely lady before them wove the tale of her life; beginning with her mother and her life with the Simms family.

As hardened as they both were, they were equally appalled at her mother’s actions and humbled by that family’s generosity. Her assertions of what her life would have been without their aid, made both advocates shudder.

‘How’ Madeleine wondered, as she thought of her own mother and the mother her sister had become, ‘could her mother do that to her? What sort of woman would do such a thing to her child?’

Nikita also touched on her teaching career, brief though it had been, and it was evident to the two lawyers that this lady had loved her young charges deeply and missed them very much.

However, when she spoke of her friend Carla, Madeleine and Leon could see Nikita’s sorrow as it played across her features. However, a moment later, the emotions on her lovely face flickered wildly in the opposite direction as she spoke of Michel and how they had met.

The story was a fantastic one and Leon was reminded of the stories of gallant knights and fair maidens that he read to his sons. He knew without a doubt, that if he had heard this story second hand, his response to it would have been cynical. Instead, he was left breathless, as he watched the genuine depths of love reflected on the face of the beautiful woman before him.

Michael put Adam to bed quickly, returning to the salon where he lingering unobtrusively in the doorway; listening with a soft smile as his bride captivated both attorneys. She was the only woman he’d ever met who made him feel this deeply and he had no doubt that when she was done speaking, she would win their hearts as well.

As her story drew to a close, Leon continued to observe the Nordic beauty seated before him and marvelled at what she had suffered. The lovely lady before him didn’t seem to harbour any bitterness or resentment towards her tormentors; not even the persistent David Fanning. He shook his head in disbelief. He couldn’t imagine not feeling those emotions if her life had been his.

Nikita’s monologue had been interspersed with questions the two lawyers had fired at her periodically and their interview spanned the better part of two hours. Both Madeleine and Leon had listened attentively and finally they decided it was time to leave.

‘Yes.’ Leon thought with a small smile as he rose to leave. ‘I have made the correct decision in not contesting custody. Adam will flourish under this lady’s care. There’s no doubt in my mind that she’ll love him as much as her own child.’

“Would you please wait for a few minutes before you go Madeleine?” Michael asked quietly when the two lawyers rose to go. “We need to talk.”

“Of course.” Madeleine replied, sensing that her client had something to tell her that he didn’t wish Leon to know.

“Goodnight then.” Leon said, as he too got the hint. “I enjoyed meeting you, Nikita. It was a pleasure. Michel, thank you for letting me come here this evening to meet your lovely wife.”

“And the custody issue?” Madeleine inquired.

“I will not contest Judge Jones’ decision. I am only too well aware that Elena is not a fit mother, and I had no doubt at the time that Judge Jones handed down her decision that she had made the correct judgment.”

“Are you certain Leon?” Madeleine probed.

“Yes. Giving you custody of Adam is the only sane choice in all this Michel. I know you don’t understand why I chose to be Elena’s lawyer…..” Leon continued.

“You’re wrong, Leon.” Michael replied. “I do understand. You’re a man of principles and you promised Sallah you’d always watch out for his daughter. I respect that.”

“So do I, Leon.” Madeleine said with a slight smirk. “But even understanding that won’t stop me from winning on the rest of the case.”

“You can try.” Leon said with a smile. “But even if I don’t win, I am and always will be your friend Michel. I hope you know that.”

“I do know it Leon.” Michael said quietly. “I respect you, but I know your client better than you do. I’m willing to bet that she hasn’t told you everything… and that’s going to cost you in the end.”

“You could very well be correct Michel.” Leon said in agreement. “However, the reason I wanted to meet your wife tonight was to put my mind at rest in regard to her capabilities with your son.”

“And your conclusion?” Michael countered.

“Your little demonstration this evening was charming and it clearly showed that Adam is happy here with you and Nikita. I am firmly convinced that it is in his best interests to stay with both of you.” Leon replied seriously. “I would be remiss as an officer of the court to do anything else.”

‘Yes.’ Madeleine thought in relief. ‘This is all Michel really wanted, but I’m not done with that little bitch yet.’

“Thank you Leon.” Madeleine replied as she shoved down a feeling of triumph. “I knew you’d come to this decision.”

“I’d also like to thank you Leon, and thank you for coming this evening.” Michael said sincerely; shaking the other man’s hand. “I appreciate you doing this and I want you to know that you won’t regret your decision.”

“You’re both welcome. I don’t think I will regret it either, Michel.” Leon said with a small smile. “Not now. Goodnight.”

After Leon had left, Nikita and Michael relayed what had happened earlier with Adam and Lakeisha. She listened attentively and then smirked.

“Well,” she said, “it’s too late to stop proceedings in regard to the dental impression. That’s happening tomorrow, so we’ll at least have concrete proof that Elena didn’t do it.”

“Madeleine!” Nikita said in surprise. “Couldn’t you stop this?”

“I could,” Madeleine said. “if I’d known this information earlier in the evening. Michel is right, Nikita. It won’t hurt Elena to go through this, and it might just teach her a valuable lesson.”
