“I don't love you. I never did.”

Of all the strategies she could think of, this wasn't the most effective -- that would take more drugs, or maybe reprogramming. But they were in the middle of nowhere, a bunch of trees camouflaging the bolthole she'd blown in some third rate terrorists' bunker, and she needed to work with what she had, her knowledge of Michael and the self-loathing that seemed programmed into him. If she could just get him started, he would continue on his own, walking through the woods, walking away from Section and his dismal life there. Walking to a freedom that she couldn't have.

Even now she could barely believe that it would work, that the plans within contingencies within profiles she'd labored on for so long might actually play out. She'd railed against her life in Section since the moment she understood she’d been recruited, she couldn't really remember when she realized that there was no getting out for her. She had been a pawn for a very long time, hauled around to serve a series of agendas, but she finally turned the tables on the people who owned her, trading her life for his.

She came to get him just as he had pulled her out of disaster all those times, dragged him up to the surface and told him the biggest lie she could manage. Told him to his face. Told it well enough to get his attention, to send him off looking for Adam and maybe even Elena, though she didn't like to think about that. Told it to keep him from looking back, as she returned to the land of the dead.

Eurydice is doomed to the Underworld no matter what, but Orpheus can get out into the light, as long as he doesn't look back.
