Chapter 49

Michael was worried. Two days of he and Nikita being in his house and something just wasn’t right with Nikita. They ate together, spent time together, watched movies together, and in general lived normal lives - as normal as they could be at least. They were both still recovering from what they had been through. But as Michael continued to feel better and better as the hours passed, Nikita seemed to be almost shrinking in his eyes. She was too quiet, subdued almost, she would eat with Michael but not as much as she should and she was up and down all night long and tossing and turning when in bed.

Michael got her to rest some during the day but not for very long and she never seemed to sit still for any period of time. He was really starting to grow concerned and he wanted to talk to her about it but she had become so unapproachable today. If he would even look at her for too long she would get up and leave the room. Not knowing what to do to make things better he had been very relieved to get a call from Marco that he had been released and he wanted to come over and see them. Figuring that this was a good idea Michael invited him for dinner, along with Jasmine of course if that was what Marco wanted to do. But when Michael shared this information with Nikita she was not pleased.

“You did what?”

“I invited Marco over for dinner. I thought it would be a great way to thank him again for everything.” He shrugged.

“Without asking me? Without even thinking whether or not I might not think it is a good idea?” She was almost yelling. He was pleased to see some emotion from her, but at the same time he hadn’t expected her to get upset about this.

“I didn’t mean to do anything wrong. I thought you would want to see him now that he is out of the hospital. Would want to spend time and talk with him.”

“Oh yeah we can catch up on old memories.” She sarcastically bit back at him.

“Nikita….” But she turned from him without listening.

“No. I think I need to go home. I have spent enough time here.” With that she turned and stomped into the bedroom but he followed right behind her.

He watched as she grabbed her overnight bag and started to stuff things in it. He grabbed it off the bed and put it behind himself on the floor. She tried to grab for it but he quickly grabbed her wrist to stop her. She glared at him, “What the hell are you doing?”

“You are not leaving. We need to talk about this and what is going on with you.”

“The only thing going on with me is that you are driving me crazy. I need my own space and I will make my own decisions. Now give me the bag!” she told him through gritted teeth.
But he stood firm as he calmly told her, “No.”

She stared at him for only a moment, “Fine. Keep it. I’m leaving either way.”

She skirted around him and headed for the front door. But he was faster and stopped her by spinning her around and picking her up in his arms. Which just continued to piss her off to no end as she yelled at him, “Put me down! Who the hell do you think you are!”

She continued to struggle but she was no match for him and he deposited her on the sofa in the den and then went and closed the door to the room. “Now stop acting like a child and tell me what the problem is.”

“I already told you, you shouldn’t have just made plans without talking to me.”

But he knew better. He sat down beside her and stroked her hair back behind her ear, “No, that’s not the real problem. You’ve been acting strange for the last day or so.”

“Well who wouldn’t? Look at what we have been through. Of course I wouldn’t be acting normal.”

He wanted to believe her, that this was just temporary and that all would be well. But something buried in her eyes told him differently and he couldn’t figure out what it was. As he sat looking at her she continued, “I admit I overreacted about Marco a bit. But can’t you understand that the connection that I had with him was all about David. That’s still really uncomfortable for me. Also you could have asked me if I even wanted company for dinner.”

Her reply was logical and it made sense to Michael. He had been wrong in inviting the other man without talking to Nikita first and he was ashamed for that. And she had been through a lot and maybe her somber mood was over all of that. “I’m sorry Nikita, I should have asked you before I asked Marco. I won’t make that mistake again.”

She then smiled at him, “Thank you. Now what time will he be here?”

“You still want him to come?” he was surprised.

“Yes I do,” she said as she reached in and kissed Michael. “It’s not really that I don’t want to see Marco, you just surprised me with the news. I hate surprises.”

He smiled at her and then kissed her back, “I’ll remember that.”

“Now what should we have for dinner?”

Michel listened as she rattled off ideas for their meal that had ingredients that were in the house. But in the back of his mind he knew that something else was up with Nikita, he just didn’t know what it was.
