祖父是前雲南巡撫，父親則是清未民初「四公子」之一。
記憶力驚人。曾有人說他能背誦整部《資治通鑑》這或許誇大了一點，但他被認為是上一世紀中國最有學問的人，卻從沒有人提出異議。
留學歐美一十八年，一身兼長二十多種中外文字備受各國著名大學讚譽，卻沒有取過一張文憑或學位。
任教清華時，不單有很多學生到來旁聽，連其他學系的教授也來聽其講課，因而被譽為「導師中之導師」。
國民黨把他當作國寶，要用飛機運他到台灣；共產黨對他百般優待，一心討好。後來更傳出英女王及史太林均拍電報來問他健康。
一九六九年病死廣州，為其跡近傳奇的一生劃上了休止符；卻給中國學術界帶來一個長長的感嘆號。
十年浩劫，帶走了陳寅恪，也創傷了中國文化的經脈使其一厥不振。
