這裡有個不成文的規定：「新來的要往上睡，待下面那個走了，就可以下去，然後再新來的又睡在上面。」只有在這裡熬久了的人才知道睡在下面的好處。

我是新來的，獄警告訴我，你應該沒有機會往下面睡了，因為下面那個老頭是個重犯，我可以放出去時，他也還要待在這兒過世。

到了那所房舍，只有走廊外是點著黃燈，內裡就有一兩雙眼在盯著我，獄警帶我到那張唯一空出的上格床位，吩咐我別生事，又踢了踢蹲在我床邊的那個猴子頭，就闊步走了。他那關門聲大得吵醒了所有人，一兩個碩大的黑影已經破口大罵，又叫我明天當心，別想有好日子過。

我看到了那個老頭，他沒有因吵鬧而起來，只是別轉了面,把被子蓋過了頭。被子不怎麼厚，是個瘦削的架子，而且在瑟縮著，個子看來就更小，若不是獄警告訴我是個老頭，我會以為是個小孩。

外面的黃燈使我隱約地看到鐵床的支架，我脫了鞋，就抓住那些支架，要攀上去。突然，一雙手大力捉住了我一根腿，若不是手還抓住支架，整個人都給扯跌下來。「別惹我！老頭！」我鬆脫了他，既不想吵醒那些傢伙，又要讓這老頭知道我在生氣，我就一手抽住他的領口，我的鼻子幾乎貼著他的臉，「別惹我！告訴你，別再惹我！」「報．．應．．報應．．」我一手推開了他，他一軟的攤在床上，只是在喃喃：「報應．．報應．．．」我再懶理他，知道要進這裡來已經是倒了個大霉，就徑自再攀上床。
