當人仍處於「浪漫與享樂,抽象與理智」的階段時,一切「投入」跟「內在的存在」都是偶然。不雖要原因,沒有前設,彷如物理世界的物質偶然離合。然而享樂失落於情慾,理智失落於思想,因為兩者都不能長久滿足。當人不斷尋求,就不斷失落,進入無盡空虛,除非跳出這個階梯,離開這個被祁克果命名為「感性階段」的地方。
