Okay David, thanks. I had just browsed through Amazon and unfortunately, no 1997 (according to you) Last Night Of The Proms are on the shelves. Excluding the 100th Season of the Proms in VHS format, only those after the year 2000 can be found, including Sir Davis' farewell Concert (Opus.)
I have also seen the Youtube clips of Mark Elder and Jiri Belohlavek conducting "Pomp & Circumstance No. 1," but curiously it is the 1997 Sir Davis' presentation that really plucked my heartstrings. I think it had something to do with the bright lights of the Hall at that time. Everything was so brightly colorful, adding weight to the robust exhiliration of the whole affair. Plus, I am a sucker for loud orchestral music; and the BBC presentation of this 1997 event did not disappoint as you can really feel the music pouring out the speakers. Unlike the Elder and Belohlavek versions where the Hall was a bit dark for such rousing music; on top of that, the music seemed muted (or am I just imagining this?) This is the reason why I would love to have the 1997 Sir Davis' presentation on DVD.
Anyway, I'm glad I found this particular Youtube clip, because prior to this, I knew nothing of the Proms. Now I think I should add this to my list of "Things To Do Before I Die": Do the Coast to Coast Walk, visit the Lake District, and then go to London on the Last Night of the Proms. (Dear me, that would take me years to save for such a trip for I live outside the UK. Patience, Robert, patience.)
Btw, forgive my ignorance, but why is it that at one point in the piece, right before the "graduation march" part starts, that people would laugh? This curious phenomena all happened in the Davis, Elder and Belohlavek presentations. Also, what's with the bobbing up and down of the crowd? Does this kind of crowd movement have a formal name? Thanks David, from Robert
