Heh, I figured out the issue. I emailed the guy who sent it to me, and he informed me that he had repaired the unit several years ago, and in doing so he replaced the internals with those from an IBM WorkPad. The WorkPad is a clone of the Palm V, not the Vx, so I actually have the internals of a V with the body and screen of a Vx. Mystery solved!
