Details plase:

What are you connectiong to? PC or Mac? What Operating System? What are you syncing to: Outlook, Palm Desktop or something else?

Were you using another Palm device previously? Did you have a previous version of Palm software installed?

If connecting to a PC, is the device recognized when you first plug it into the PC itself?

Did you verify the HotSync ID on the device matches sync manager?
