The problem is like to be a staic issue with usb sync. There are two solutions that I know of. The problem goes away if you use a serial cradle and/or Plam now produces a backup card that will back up your palm, totally drain down the battery, and reset the usb capability. I have used both and they work. The card or the cradle can be teased out of Palm with some effort.

The card takes 8 hours to drain the battery after which you will have to recharge for 2 hours before restoring from the card.
