Subject: Maumee Bay (and nearby) sightings Saturday
In reply to: Greg 's message, "Shrike still at MBSP" on 04:53:35 11/29/03 Sat

Jim Witter and I birded Maumee Bay on Saturday morning. We drove through the campgroundonce, but didn't find the Shrike. The swimming beach held Ring-billed and Herring Gulls, Canada Geese, and a domestic goose. The lake was fairly productive, with Ring-billed, Herring, Bonaparte's and a single Greater-Black Backed Gull. Ducks include many Red-breasted Merganser, a single Hooded Merganser, 18 Common Goldeneye (all female), 6 Bufflehead, and 2 Lesser Scaup. Northern Harrier were seen throughout the park.

Just to the west, off of South Shore Veterans Park, a flock of several hundred Red-breasted Merganser was flying eastward across the lake. About a hundred RB Mergs were sitting on the water.

Crane Creek was closed for waterfowl hunting (only open on Sundays).

At Metzger Marsh, 2 Snow Buntings were seen on the entrance road before the marina along with a Greater-Black Backed Gull off the pier.
