Leslie--

Hidden Lakes can be an interesting place, mostly in migration though.

I could personally recommend the Petersburg State Game Area in Petersburg, MI, just NE of Blissfield. Just east of Blissfield, take Riga Hwy north off of 223 to Todd Road. Go east on Todd road to Bacon road. Go north on BAcon to Teal road. Go left on Teal (which is back to the NW). Teal will run into Lulu road. There are access points (trails, parking areas, etc) along Teal and also Lulu roads. Good birding can be had in the Game area right along these 2 roads also.

Interesting birds you should look for here include Alder flycatcher (Lulu road parking area--Willows are very common), White-eyed vireos, Yellow-breasted chats, Blue-winged warblers (watch for the hybrids), Orchard orioles, and many more. These are all species in the successional areas, and should be pretty easy to find.

There is some decent forest habitat here as well, and with a little effort (bring bug repellent!), you should turn up more woodland species, i.e. Acadian flycatcher, Yellow-throated vireos, Scarlet tanagers, etc.

Wild turkeys have been running loose back here for a while now.

This area is definitely under-birded, and under-explored. You could find a real gem or 2 with a little luck!

Good luck, and please let me know what you end up finding!

Greg
