Subject: Shorebirds

Shorebirding is the order of the day if you are interested in actually looking at birds. As the woodlands are mostly silent now, the mudflats are jumping with activity.

There are 2 options near Toledo for scope-toters.

Point Mouillee state game area in Monroe County MI, about 30 miles to the north has at least 17 species present. The Vermet Unit is currently holding the throng of birds, but the Lead unit is holding birds as well. A Ruff was present for several days last week.

Ottawa NWR, about 25 miles east of Toledo, also has good shorebirding. Namely, along the Crane Creek estuary along the northern edge of the refuge. 14 species of shorebirds have been viewed here over the last week, with the best being a Wilsons phalarope.
