Subject: Crane Creek Warblers

The boardwalk at Crane Creek was packed with warblers on Friday (8-31) afternoon from 3pm to 5:30. My conservative estimate would put the count in numbers at over 200. There was constant motion (like a great spring day) all around us at ALL times. Not just a 'WAVE' of warblers but a solid 'WALL' of warblers feeding and flying in all directions along the walkway.
We saw upwards of six dozen American Redstarts, a good two dozen Magnolias, a half dozen Blackburnians, several Nashvilles, an occasional Chestnut-Sided, one male and one female Black-throated Blue, a few Cape Mays, several Black-throated Greens, a half dozen Black-and-white warblers, at least a half-dozen (if identified correctly) Blackpoll and one Bay-breasted, one Wilson's, one Canada, and a dozen or more Common Yellowthroats. I was unsure about Tennessee's.
At the east end of the boardwalk in the nearly dried marsh, we saw three Snowy Egrets, four Green Herons, and a massive snapping turtle as well as a Great Blue. From the parking lot, we scoped an immature eagle eating a fish while perched above the boardwalk. An Osprey was spotted along the drive. A Great Egret was also seen.
We also saw a half dozen Baltimore Orioles, two Yellow-throated vireos, numerous singing Warbling vireos, Eastern Wood-Pewee and lots of non-calling flycatchers, a few Ruby-throats, and a few Swainson's thrush.
Crane Creek was the tail-end of my honeymoon trip to Canada (Pt. Pelee). My new husband is now a confirmed enthusiast who understands why I love the Toledo area including pizza at Blackberry Corners and Iron City Beer!
