Subject: Wood County Big Day

Jeff and I attempted a Wood County big day yesterday, 11/2/03. Despite the beautiful weather and 11 1/2 hours of searching we were only able to come up with 56 species (far short of Greg's target number for us of 70). Ducks were sorely missing from the river with only mallard and wigeon being seen. Nothing out of the ordinary as far as raptors go except for MISSING turkey vulture. We saw/heard none of those wonderful migrants Greg had in Temperance (sounds like a Monroe County big day would have been fun!). Our only surprise of the day were the two eastern phoebes continuing to hang out at Wintergarden Park in Bowling Green. Harriers quartering over two, large, grassy fields give us hopes that short-eared owls will show up there. We'll keep you posted.
