Subject: Wintergarden Ramble In The Park

Cheryl Conley was the special guest of co-leaders Chris Gajewicz and Becky Cullen for Wednesday evening's (9/3/03) Ramble at Wintergarden Park. Can't blame the weather this time for lack of participants.

Birds were few with only 19 species seen or heard throughout the evening. The lone migrant species seen was a group of nighthawks hungrily eating their way over the meadow. Unfortunately, they left a lot of mosquitoes behind.

Butterflies, dragonflies and anything else that creeps, crawls, runs or flies were also in short supply. Not wanting to venture deeper into the woods where even more mosquitoes were lurking, we walked the meadow enjoying the numerous prairie plants and grasses. At least 50-60 (and probably more) species of wildflowers can be found in bloom right now including the largest patch in the state of spotted horse mint, an Ohio endangered species.

One question was clearly answered tonight. In a showdown of insect repellants, Repel won hands down over Off.
