Subject: Pickerel Creek Information

Hello All,
Last week we stopped at the Pickerel Creek Headquarters and I talked with a man who provided us with a map an information about where the best shorebird habitat might be. The impoundments to the North and West of the observation decks were let down some time ago and are probably mostly dried up by now, but they are currently in the process of letting several units down in the SE corner of the Wildlife area. He suggested that we park in an unmarked parking area along SR 6, about half way between Vickery Rd and the SE corner of the WA, and then walking the dike North (in line with a row of dead trees where the eagles often are seen perched), checking the impoundments to the East. there are 4 or 5 units in this SE corner that are currently being let down. The best shorebird habitat was along the N side of the unit where that N-S dike "Ts". There weren't many shorebirds there at the time, but the habitat looked pretty good all along the unit for a couple of hundred yards to the East. In the morning, viewing would be better by approaching this area from the road that runs along the East side of the WA.
He also mentioned that the next area to be "let down" would be directly North of here; in the Northeast corner of the WA. This man was very pleasant and helpful and remembered last year when the Ruff and Red-necked Stint attracted a lot of birders to the area.
I hope that this information will be useful to those of you in search of what appears to be very limited shorebird habitat along Lake Erie for this year's Fall migration. Good Birding!
