Subject: Sandusky Bay Area (longish, sorry)

Brad and I spent a few hours Wednesday afternoon/evening (8/6/03) checking for shorebirds around Sandusky Bay. We started at Pickeral Creek. A small mudflat just north of the platform had a handful of yellowlegs, least sandpipers and 2 white-rumped sandpipers (and killdeer of course). The mudflat on the eastern edge of the marsh (as posted on the Ohio listserve) yielded nothing more than a few leasts, killdeer and 2 spotted sandpipers, lots of Caspian terns,
black-crowned night-herons, eagles, and egrets and a funny looking duck that was similar to a female mallard but with a red head.

I had hoped to walk out into the middle of the marsh to look for rare waders and pockets of shorebirds but the helicopter spraying chemicals throughout the center of the marsh forced us to keep to the edeges. The place is overrun with loostrife so I hope that is what they were after.

One pond at Willow Point (the eastern pond) looked to have perfect mud and muck but again held only killdeer, yellowlegs, bue-winged teal, hooded mergansers, black ducks, etc.

The tricolored heron remains at Medusa Marsh and was easily found right next to road in the grass at the western end.

A special note for Chuck, Terri and Hillary: There were a half dozen cattle egrets in a field along the north side of Rt. 6 about half way between Margaritaville and Toft's Dairy (NE side of Sandusky). But when we drove by again 10 minutes later they were gone. That seems to be the pattern with this Sandusky Colony. They never stay in one spot very long.

Other places checked held too much water or just no birds. In summary, there doesn't appear to be many shorebirds (or much habitat) out there. Right now the biggest oncentration appears to be BG's new Conneaut/Mitchell Rd. "wetland." Birds continue to arrive with l. and g. yellowlegs numbering at least 70 Wednesday. Everyone else in town may be praying for the rain to stop but I for one hope it rains every day for the next 2 months.
