Subject: Barn Owls and Pie Field Trip Results

105 bird species were seen in Holmes and surrounding counties Saturday and Sunday. In attendance were Dennis and Martha Johns, Howard and Ann Rosenberg, Lee and Karen Mitchell, Fred and Doris Plassman, John Chadwick, Eric Durbin, Jeff and me. Leader Greg Miller guided us around Killbuck Marsh and Woodbury Wildlife Areas as well as Mohican State Park.

Some of the highlights were Prairie warbler, Worm-eating warbler, Prothonotary warbler and Yellow-throated warbler. A dozen Bobolinks flying around singing all in one field was a real treat. A group of 20 Solitary sandpipers on one mudflat was an unusual sight. Grassland birding on Sunday morning was exceptional with Henslow's and Grasshopper sparrows singing in good numbers and perching in full view.

Unfortunately, our main target bird could not be seen. All nine of the area barn owl nests are late in hatching this year. With the birds still sitting on eggs, we could not disturb them.

But the pie was excellent.
