BARN OWLS AND PIE FIELD TRIP

When: May 3rd and 4th

Where: Holmes County, Ohio

Who: Trip Leaders Greg Miller and Dan Sanders
Trip Coordinator Becky Cullen

What: A TNA field trip to the heart of Amish country to seek out barn owls, warblers, marsh birds, grassland birds and to sample the local Amish cooking and baking.

Why: Because it sounded like a good idea.

The Details: We will depart the Toledo area at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 3rd. The departure point is yet to be determined. We will car-pool to Holmes County (about a three-hour drive)where we will meet Dan and Greg. Saturday’s birding will include seeing barn owls at a local
farm. Some grassland birding and/or a visit to Killbuck Marsh Wildlife Area will also be included in the day’s events. Dinner will be at the Der Dutchman restaurant in Walnut Creek. Saturday night we will stay at the Berlin Village Inn in Berlin, Ohio. Five rooms or more reserved will get us a discounted price of $50 plus tax per room.

Sunday we will enjoy a continental breakfast at the motel and then do more birding in the area including a trip to Mohican State Park. We will focus on birds that are a little more difficult to find along Lake Erie such as the southern warblers (Worm-eating, Pine, Cerulean, Hooded,
Kentucky, Yellow-throated, Prothonotary, Prairie, Northern Parula, Louisiana Waterthrush, Yellow-breasted Chat) as well as some grassland specialties such as Henslow’s sparrow and bobolinks. The day’s exploring will end around 3:00 p.m. when we will begin the trip home to Toledo. Anyone needing to head home before that time will certainly be welcomed to do so.

Lunch both days will be brown bag or fast food as you desire.

Reservations: The trip will be limited to 16 people so get your reservations in early. Contact Becky at (419) 354-4373, send her an email at jtcullen@bghost.net, or call the TNA hotline, (419) 877-9640. Be sure to leave your name and phone number. Deadline for reservations is April 19, 2003.
