Subject: Owls of Killdeer Plains Field Trip Results

This year's trip to Killdeer Plains would have been better titled the Raptors of Killdeer Plains. Eight species of raptors were seen including many harriers (3 of them adult males) and at least one rough-legged hawk. Owls have been scarce there this year and yesterday was no exception with one lone short-eared glimpsed in the headlights and lightening as we were leaving the area. The continuing winter conditions resulted in no open water anywhere. Brisk winds and the threat of rain may have contributed to the lack of many expected songbirds with even chickadees and titmice lacking. The day was not a total loss however with the above-mentioned raptor parade and a welcomed hint of spring from vocalizing meadowlarks and killdeer.
