Subject: Lapland Longspurs (breeding males)

I had heard in recent years from local birders that alternate (breeding) plumage Lapland Longspurs could be found in April around these parts - many are fly-over flocks, but with persistence (and luck?) some may be found on the ground...

On Sat 12, I had 65 species between North Baltimore and Bowling Green, with the highlight DEFINITELY being a flock of Lapland Longspurs off Mitchell Rd s of Greenburg, a bit south of Bowling Green. After keeping my eye out on plowed and grassy fields, I came across a flock of approx 100 birds that landed in some tall corn stubble. After some persistent examination of the corn rows, I was able to get good looks at some breeding males - MAGNIFICENT!

Just goes to show: if you keep digging, you may find buried treasure! :-)
