Subject: Wood County Big Day

December 1st I attempted another Wood County Big Day. 5 months down, 7 to go. My goal was 50 species although I thought 40 was probably more reasonable. I knew I would need close to 25 species from Wintergarden Park and if I left there with less than 20 I might as well call it quits and go home. I had some really sad misses there but came out with 22 species so I continued. Picked up horned lark and Lapland longspur right where Chuck said they would be (thanks, Chuck!) then hit the river. My luck changed dramatically and I quickly added all the species I thought would be hard to come by (but which of course Greg did not - does he always have to be right??). Mary Jane Thurstin Park, as always, was good to me and I quickly added creeper, kinglet, yellow-rumped, winter wren and was surprised by a mockingbird along the canal (no need to head south spending time hunting one down thank goodness!) and even more surprised by a totally out of habitat pheasant flushed from the brush along the river. Didn't find anything rare or exciting, just the expected birds. Did come up with 6 ducks which was nice. Highlight was probably the 51 sandhill cranes that flew over. After braving the increasingly strong winds at Rossford marina I decided to call it quits thinking I had 42 or 43 species, leaving too many to track down to hit 50. Upon further study of the list after arriving home, I discovered I had 46. A second trip to Wintergarden or a couple stops along the Portage River would probably have put me over the top. 50 species are definitely out there - go get 'em Paul!

To Greg Miller: If I was "totally bent" before, what am I now after a DECEMBER Wood County Big Day???

Happy Birding.

Becky

P.S. There were 2 very strange looking ducks or small geese at Orleans Park in Perrysburg. If anyone else stops there and sees them and can identify them, I'd sure like to know what the heck they are. Escapes, I'm sure, but still curious.
