Subject: Toledo Christmas Count Owling--we need volunteers!!

The Toledo Christmas Bird Count wants YOU! We need volunteers to go owling anytime (the more the better!!) between midnight and 6am on Sunday December 15.

Eastern screech-owls are virtually guaranteed, and Great-horneds are very likely as well, with any group willing to put in a little time.

Last year, we set a Toledo count record with 65 Eastern screech-owls, with rather limited coverage.

As far as I know, the NATIONAL Christmas count record is 112, which is held by the Grand Rapids/Waterville count!

With enough coverage and a little luck with the weather (no wind), we could break that record. The ONLY thing we need is volunteers, willing to spend as much time as possible.

Currently, we have only 3 groups willing to give it a go for more than 3 hours. We would be happy to take any effort you'd be willing to spare.

The areas are pretty well scouted out--we'll tell you where to go and play tapes or whistle for the owls. Just call me, and we'll set it up!

Also, we would LOVE to find a Barred owl on this count. Probably the only reasonable place to fond one would be the 10 mile creek valley at Ottawa Park. Young Barred owls do move around a bit (if not migrate), so winter would be the perfect time to get lucky and hear a Barred owl within the Toledo count circle.

While the Barred owl may be a pipe dream, a big push for Screech-owls is realistic, and would be a lot of fun. I think that with the groups we have now, we could break the 65 mark that was set last year.

If you are interested in helping the team, please call me at the NW Ohio RBA (419-877-9640) or email me.

Thanks!
