Subject: Eastern Phoebe

Yesterday (January 5), I discovered another Eastern phoebe. This one was feeding by hovering briefly just above the surface of some open water in a couple of ditches at the intersection (nw and se corners) of Route 20-A and Whitehouse-Spencer roads in western Lucas County.

Not sure why Eastern phoebes have decided to stick around this winter -- especially considering the extreme cold in early December -- but they have. This is the 4th post-November 30 record that I am aware of locally this year: One in our neighborhood in Whitehouse through December 1, another at Pearson Metropark through at least late December, a third at Maumee Bay SP on the 12/15 Toledo CBC, and now this one. Pretty interesting since there are so few previous late records. They're apparently showing up in other areas also, well north of their usual winter haunts.

Matt
