Paul--

Good question. As with virtually all rare duck species, the origin will likely be questioned by the Ohio Bird Records Committee. Being a member of said committee, I will take the following under consideration to accept or not accept this species:

1) Can it fly? Yes, I saw it fly.

2) Is it actively seeking popcorn and/or Doritos from folks on the dike? I have yet to see this.

3) Will it eventually follow some birder back to his/her car, and jump in the car waiting to be driven "home"? Only time will tell.

Of course, those statements were meant to be funny. But, it will be a judgement call for those of us on the committee. Seriously, there does not seem to be any tags or collars on it, but that really doesn't mean a whole lot. Also, the timing fits the vagrancy pattern for other Garganey records across North America. So unless something obvious emerges to indicate it is an escaped pet (maybe someone should check the Lost and Found ads? Just kidding again), then in my mind, it is a wild vagrant.

It is checked off on MY Ohio list unless proven to be an escape.

Greg
