Subject: Oak Openings Stuff

On a tour of the Oak Openings Preserve Metropark by bike early this morning, I had the following:

Red-headed woodpecker - Girdham & bike trail, bike trail
just east of Wilkins
Acadian flycatcher - bike trail between Wilkins & Girdham
where it's fenced on both sides
Brown creeper - pair along bike trail where it crosses Swan
Creek west of Girdham
Pine warbler - bike trail 100 yards west of Girdham,
Wilkins just north of Reed
Louisiana waterthrush - same area as Acadian
Hooded warbler - two singing males at White Oak Picnic Area
and one just east of the lodge
Summer tanager - 4 singing males: two in the dunes /
Girdham & Bike trail area (one is all pinkish-orange,
didn't see the other), one along the bike trail a few
hundred yards east of Wilkins (all red upper body), one
along Reed just east of Wilkins (orange upper body)

A fruiting tree (Serviceberry?) near the bike trail and Girdham (about 20-30 yards south of the Wabash Cannonball Trail sign) is worth checking out. In less than
10 minutes this morning, I watched all of the following gobbling berries: Red-headed and red-bellied woodpeckers, catbirds, bluebirds, Cedar waxwings, Red-eyed vireo, Summer tanager, and Baltimore orioles.
