Subject: Wood County Big Day

August 31, 2002. Wood County August Big Day - would it be a "pleasant surprise" or a "birdless hell-hole?" That was Greg's question as we began our search at 5:30 a.m. His answer at 3:00 p.m.? "It was somewhere in between."

Not having birded much in Wood County, Greg still thought 100 species was a reasonable goal for our August big day. Of course, I had to laugh at some of his possibilities. Needless to say, he now knows that when I say certain birds are rare or not found at all in Wood County, he believes me. On the other hand, he proved me wrong on several things also, one being that starting our day along the river instead of at Wintergarden Park would not hurt the woodland species portion of our list.

As with all big days, we had our ups and downs and had discussed setting a lower goal or giving up all together. Put we pushed on, discovered a counting error (sound familiar, John??) and rallied our resolve, making a return to the river to pick up more shorebirds, terns and gulls. When we finally hit 100 species, we called it a day. Someone willing to push the hunt should have been able to come up with 105 today, maybe even 110 with a little luck. Neither of us was willing to try on this particular day.

Thank you, Greg, for an enjoyable and successful day! - Becky
