Subject: Nocturnal migrants very evident now

Songbird migration is in full swing now. Neotropical migrants are now flying south over our area in droves, and can be detected most easily in the 30 minutes or so before dawn. Many (most?) of these passerines call at night, and it is possible (and really neat) to hear these birds as they fly over.

One can experience this by simply going outside and listening toward the sky. Thrushes are readily identifiable by their nocturnal flight calls--Gray-cheeked, Swainsons, and Veery are all migrating in good numbers right now, and are all distinctive in their call notes.

Warblers are also flying over in high numbers, and some people say they can identify their nocturnal notes, but I cannot. There is supposed to be an audiotape coming out that has many species recorded. If indeed that is the case, it could be a real revolution in birding by ear.

The Catharus thrushes calls are available in commercial audiotapes, and also on the Cornell website I think.
