Subject: Pine grosbeak in the Oak Openings

I received a very convincing report of a female Pine Grosbeak in the Oak Openings this evening. Unfortunately, the report is a little belated.

The bird was seen on Wednesday Nov 21 (afternoon), and identified as a female Pine Grosbeak by a park naturalist (Chris---his last name escapes me now). He relayed this information to Tom Kemp just a while ago, and Tom called me with the news.

The bird was seen at the new Window on Wildlife feeder complex at Mallard Lake. Steve Lauer was at the window yesterday, and I was there today, and we were both unaware of the Pine grosbeak at the time. We were entertained, however by the 40-50 Pine siskins that were mobbing the feeders there.

Without question, this bird should be looked for. There is plenty of natural food still available, so it would not be dependent on the feeders for survival. However, the feeders at this location require PLENTY of extra attention. Not only for this magical bird, but other goodies as well.

This feeder complex is in perhaps the prime location in all of Ohio for winter finches, and you can bet that sooner rather than later, Evening grosbeaks will show up, as will the other finches.

Certainly, if you see the Pine grosbeak, please take the time to call me personally so I can update the rare bird alert, and get word out. My home phone number is on the NW Ohio RBA, updated today.

Greg
