Subject: Thanksgiving birding

Turned up 52 species of birds between the Lake and Bowling Green on Thanksgiving. A Brown Thrasher was hanging around Wintergarden Park in BG. The Black Scoter was still at Salisbury Road quarry. Mockingbird and Lincoln's Sparrow were found at Bayshore power plant. A Toledo Edison employee had two Snowy Owls on the plant property on the other side of the channel - almost lucked into a visit to that spot, but the employee couldn't help me - she said the security has really tightened since 9/11. Maumee Bay State Park had Northern Shrike and Common Redpolls*. Snow Buntings were 'swirling' around me, out on the levee at Metzger Marsh. Some misses were: no shorebirds, only the 3 gulls, and almost nothing actually out on the Lake. *I don't have much experience with Redpolls, but there was a flock of 'finchy' birds a bit like Goldfinches, but the flock was larger and 'tighter' than I am used to seeing for Goldfinches. They landed on a small tree for about 3 seconds, but took off before I could get any field marks - but they didn't seem to be goldfinches or siskins, and their flight vocalizations matched Redpoll very nicely on my tape reference at home later on...
