As another relative beginner, I don't agree with this much at all. I'm not even a TNA member, but in a field trip I attended that Tom led a couple of years ago, he was informative and extremely friendly. When I email Greg privately, he's always helpful. Do your homework, read your field guides at home so that you don't shout out "Connecticut!" for every warbler you spot with a gray hood...and overall just practice good birding etiquette, and you'll be fine.
