Subject: Probable Glaucous-winged gull at Huron Pier

On Saturday, Jan 26, Karl Overman (Detroit) contacted me to relay his and Hein Prinsen's (Ann Arbor) results from their Ohio birding excursion.

Among other things, they found an intriguing gull at the Huron Pier which they could not put a finger on. At the time, they considered both Thayer's and GLAUCOUS-WINGED gulls, but could not really decide.

Hein managed to take video of the bird, and scan some stills for others to review.

I am no gull aficianado, and don't know much about these things, but after looking at the photos, doing some research, and reading some comments by some very well-respected gull observers (including Sibley), I am pretty convinced that the bird at Huron is indeed a GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL.

The bird is still present through yesterday.

As to what to look for? Check out the pics on Hein's website at http://www-personal.umich.edu/~hprinsen/gulls.htm

Sorry, I do not know how to link the above---you will have to do a cut and paste.

Good luck--if accepted as Glaucous-winged gull, it will be Ohio's 1st.

Greg
