I'm watching an ESPN "30 For 30" documentary called "The Class That Saved Coach K." It's about the high school class of 1982 recruits (Dawkins, Bilas, Alarie, Henderson, Williams) which pulled Krzyzewki's program out of its 1980-82 tailspin, leading to resurrection and, eventually, K's first national championship in 1991.
Coach K has just finished his third year and the class's freshman season 11-17 with a 109-66 blowout loss to Virginia. After the game, the coaching staff goes out to dinner at Denny's (can you imagine?) and sports information direction Johnny Moore raises his water glass to toast, "Here's to forgetting tonight."
Krzyzewski cuts him off and interjects, "No, put down your glass. Here's to never f---ing forgetting tonight." And that was the trough, the low point.
The next year Tommy Amaker arrives to take the ballhandling responsibilities from Dawkins and Duke was on its way to success.
Usually we only see the celebrations and the net cutting. It's interesting to hear the stories about frustration, worry, uncertainty, depression, anxiety and all of the other emotions in sports and life besides winning.
