This team is special. And should start getting votes in the national rankings.

So who is to blame for the continued demise of the Columbia Men's Basketball program--over the years last nine years:
Consider these possibilities: 1 The Athletic Director 2. One or more of The Assistant Athletic Directors; 3. The Head Coach; 4. One or more of the Assistant Coaches; 5. The players themselves; 6. Others

Having watched most of the Lionesses' (not sure if that's the best possessive form of the Columbia team) games, I think that this season marks an important milestone.

For the first time ever, the Columbia women's basketball team is the best in the conference.

Sure, the Lady Lions won a co-championship in each of the last two seasons. But in both cases, I think that Princeton was the better team, slightly but very clearly. And the Tigers proved it in the ILT, emphatically.

It's always dangerous to take the results of the first half of our annual round robin and simply double them as a projection for the full season. But I predict that Columbia will finish the regular season 14-0. They've already won at Princeton and Harvard, their two greatest challenges on the schedule. When the Tigers and Crimson come calling to Levien, the place will be rocking, both because the perfect conference regular season will be at stake and because the women stand in such sharp contrast to the men.

Ah, the men.

After Columbia upset Villanova on the Main Line and perhaps breathing the heady fumes of the football team's tri-championship, some prognosticators thought that the Lions were due to turn the corner.

At the time, I posted that returning five starters from a team which finished 4-10, to me, forecasts another 4-10 campaign. Another year of experience doesn't mean much when the players just aren't that good.

I said then that it's better to look to a team which lost outstanding talent because the junior players stepping up are like a box of chocolate. You never know what you're going to get.

And that's exactly what's happened up in New Haven. Danny Wolf decamped for Ann Arbor and, as it turned out, he was keeping a pretty good player from getting minutes last year.

Yale's now reloading, not rebuilding.

I think Yale's got a pretty good shot at 14-0. They've already won at Jadwin, which is the biggest speed bump on their schedule.

We're only halfway done, but I think the future is pretty clear. On the women's side, the Columbia Lions will win their first outright championship ever. The field will be Columbia, Princeton, Harvard and Brown.

On the men's side, Yale will continue at the top of the pecking order, fending off a challenge from a disappointing Tiger squad. The field will be Yale, Cornell, Princeton and a fourth team to be named.

7/8 of the two fields are set.

The win again Princeton was in Morningside Heights. They still need to travel to Tiger town.

One more thing: Brown is not a lock for the #4 seed in the woman's ILT. They are the only team not to play Columbia yet whereas Penn has played Columbia twice. Penn could jump ahead of Brown.

Thank you, BG, for both of your points. I watched long excerpts from the Columbia-Princeton women's game. I guess I need to learn to tell the difference between Levien and Jadwin. Remind me, which is the one that looks like an aircraft hanger?

Your data point lowers the probability of Miss Megan finishing 14-0.

Also, very fair about Brown and Penn. Brown hung with Princeton for three quarters before the Tigers found another gear. It was almost as if the Bears considered being tied after three quarters to be a moral victory and then relaxed. Meanwhile, Princeton of course only plays for championships. While the Bears were relaxing, the Tigers said, "We're bringing the pain. Right now."

I'm still going to call Brown finishing ahead of Penn, but your caution is well advised.

I misspelled "hangar" on the basketball site and got flamed by the Penn fans.

That is fantastic. Yeah, you and I both deserve to be, if not flamed, at least singed.

Full disclosure: Reading your post, it took me a micro-second to realize that I had misspelled the word. I guess the Penn fans have been so emotionally drained by their M/W seasons so far that they don't have the energy to correct my spelling.

While I do agree with nearly all of AO's observations, I would respectfully suggest to him that his criticism of the players on the Columbia Mens Basketball Team is a bit unfair. It is my opinion that Columbia indeed has a number of very talented players and were they coached by anyone other than Coach Engles and his assistants the team's record would be much better than their current record of 0-6 in the Ivy League. In my opinion, Columbia's guards are as good as any in the Ivy League, but have struggled on defense due to obviously inept coaching that has resulted in Columbia's opponents scoring over ninety points against Columbia in five of Columbia's last six games. Furthermore, I do believe that Columbia does have some very talented players up front, specially on offense, but they are totally unschooled on defense due again to obviously inept coaching. I am certain that everyone on this Board recognizes by now that it is not the fault of the individual players, that the team's Head Coach, Engles, has compiled what has to be one of the worst records in Ivy League history. The responsibility for Columbia's 0-6 losing record in the Ivy League so far this year and about 23-81 over Engles long tenure clearly belongs to Coach Engles and his staff and the Athletic Administrartion, as well as any other persons in the Columbia Administration that are involved directly or indirectly in the continued employment of Engles and his staff.

Question for smarter people:

How does Columbia (1) go undefeated in the Ivies at 7-0, (2) then beat Princeton by 8, and (3) then beat Harvard AT Harvard by 9 after leading virtually wire to wire and by as much as 19, and still get ranked five spots below H with H's ranking not taking a dent after the head-to-head loss to C?

I'm aware of the transitive fallacy, but, still, I would've thought that last Friday's resounding head-to-head win (not a squeaker) AT H would have caused more of a ripple.

Is this because of the two teams' results against common opponent, IU, whom H beat by 4 and C lost to by 10, despite leading IU very late in the game?

I straight-up acknowledge that I'm not a bb whiz and am obviously missing chunks here. So, can someone provide the "second-level" knowledge that makes this make sense? Thanks in advance.

in his own way he is even worse at coaching MBB as Mangurian was at coaching football. Mangurian almost killed football at Columbia, but Engles is on his way to doing him one better.

Engles better turn it around fast or he's going to be out of a job.
