Villanova has announced it will be joining the Patriot League as a football only member starting in 2026. This brings the Patriot League to 10 football members. It’s going to get tough for the Ivy League to find OOC scheduling opponents.

I agree that it will be tough for the Ivy to find *traditional* OOC opponents.

That said, with the Ivies joining the FCS playoffs, there's been a lot of talk about whether the Ivies will attempt to schedule more competitive OOC teams to improve strength of schedule and/or toughen up for the playoffs.

If that's the path we take, then there are still a lot of potential FCS opponents out there for us to play.

I would not be surprised if the remaining CAA teams are calling up Ivy teams to see if we are interested in scheduling some games to fill their own holes in their schedules.

There's a bit of a virtuous/vicious cycle split in front of us.

Traditionally, most teams don't want to play us because (1) by late September, their own conference games have begun; (2) losing to a school most known for its physics department and US News ranking is not good for their football reputations.

If our future champions can start winning a game or two or three in the FCS playoffs each year, factor (2) will start to diminish and people will consider fitting us into their schedules where they have room. This includes high FCS teams and maybe even low FBS opponents.

On the other hand, if we can't win at all in the FCS playoffs, then we're back to being the nerds and eggheads which bring only downside and no upside to scheduling.

I have zero doubt -- none -- that in the world of 2014-24, our Ivy champion would have comported themselves quite well. Our representative would have won games and, in some years, made a genuine run. Can I see our best teams of 2014-24 winning the national championship? Yes.

The question is how does the portal/NIL phenomenon filter down to the FCS level. We know that the portal/NIL influence will remake FBS into an entirely new world, unrecognizable from the one immediately preceding it. Will it keep us from winning FCS playoff games?

As far as the Ivy is concerned Villanova's move to the Patroit League is a lateral move. This should not affect scheduling OCC,since the Ivy rarely ventures out of New England. As mentioned above by An Observer if an Ivy member can make some noise in the playoffs like HYP has done in the MBB Tournament then it will gain some outside interest. Will the cost and travel time warrant enough interest from the administrators to host or travel out side of the North East?
