Reading between the lines on his twitter feed, it appears that he had his heart set on Louisville. And it does look like there was a bit of interest between him and the Cardinals. Also got some interest from Purdue. I'm guessing that at some point, he started to accept that an offer from Louisville would not be forthcoming. So he went with Dartmouth's offer (his only offer). Maiers, on the other hand, had plenty of offers. Penn, Air Force, Navy, UMass, Buffalo, Kent State, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, Western Illinois, Arkansas State, and Butler.
