Subject: Memphis Offers Big Twelve Conference $200 Million Dowry

The University of Memphis, currently a member of the American Athletic Conference, has offered the Big Twelve Conference the following deal to be admitted:

(a) $200 million in guaranteed sponsorship monies, over a five-year period
(b) no share of conference television or bowl money for those five years
(c) "If you sleep with me for five years and, at the end of that period, you decide that the sex is not good enough, you can kick me out of bed, no questions asked."

That's right, Memphis is offering itself to the Big XII for a five-year trial marriage, complete with a $200 million dowry. And Memphis will walk away after five years if the Big XII decides that it could do better.

College football is in the process of becoming more mercenary than the NFL.

I pointed out in another thread that the Ivy League endowments will be subject to a massive tax, effective immediately. HYP will be on the hook for about a quarter billion -- that's billion with a "b" -- in endowment tax, each. Here's how we plug that hole:

The Ivy League will become a ten-team conference. We auction off the last two spots on a rotating basis. The two new schools will join the schedule for five years and pay their dues -- literally.

I used to work with a guy who had graduated from Bucknell. He used to say to me, in all seriousness, "The Ivy League invited Bucknell to join the conference, but Bucknell declined." I didn't even bother to go down that rabbit hole with him.

But now his version of history can be reality. For a few hundred million, Bucknell can be an Ivy League university -- for five years.
